The palm species Chamaerops humilis (dwarf fan palm, African hair palm, European fan palm, Mediterranean Fan Palm) is hardy in southern Britain and in sheltered locations with a free-draining soil. It is primarily a dioecious species (separate male and female plants) and here the female plant was producing a display of fruit.

This evergreen Chamaerops humilis (dwarf fan palm) can be stemless or multi-stemmed and the growth habit suits this container. The palm is drought tolerant once established and is suited to sun or partial shade.

Even in winter the mass of fan-shaped leaves of Chamaerops humilis (dwarf fan palm) make a show, especially in these garden situations, growing in association with a rock landscape and modern architecture. This evergreen palm is a ground-hugging, multi-stemmed shrub and is able to withstand drought or wind once established.
