Despite appearances Champsosaurus is not a crocodilian, or even a close relative; instead it belongs to a diapsid clade called Neochoristodera. Because of this, along with the slender shape of its snout, several Hell Creek colonists have proposed false gharial (or Hell Creek false gharial to differentiate it from the modern day version) as a common name.
Though well adapted for life in the water Champsosaurus is rather poorly built for movement on land, with only the females, who need to go on land to lay their eggs, capable of doing much more than awkwardly flopping on the ground.
