You sighed as you closed your notebook placing it and your pens back into your bag as the bell signaling the end of the day rang. It had been a long day and an even longer week and you were just excited to go home. With the image of your bed in your mind you pushed yourself up from your seat and sprinted out of your classroom, not checking to see if you left anything behind. You rushed past other students who began to clump into their friend groups, blocking your way out of the school.
You were halted again after you had made it outside, this time not due to a sea of teenagers but due to the gloomy sky and rain that continuously attacked the ground. There was another crowd of students gathered up near the entrance of the school, all reaching into their bags for an umbrella or waiting out the rain. You mimic everyone around you, stretching your arm behind you to pull out yours as well. Your hand fumbled around the side of your bag feeling for the umbrella that you had sworn you placed back into the pocket of your backpack after you had gotten to school in the morning. You come to the realization that you had left it by your desk in your hurry to leave.
You make your way back into the building you were trying so badly to escape only stopping to apologize to a student, a boy who looked somewhat familiar, after you bumped into him. You helped him pick up the couple of books he dropped before continuing to make your way to your classroom, not looking back to see the worried look he was giving you after you walked away. You finally reached the door that led into your class. Your hand shot out for the handle in a hurry to get your umbrella so you could finally leave, but you were met with disappointment when the door wouldn’t budge. The door was locked. You pressed your forehead to the small glass window on the door, cupping your hands around your face to stop the light from ruining your line of sight. Your eyes scanned the room for another student or your teacher who would be able to let you in but the room had been completely emptied. You sighed and let your head roll back in frustration before finding your way back outside.
As soon as you got back outside you felt someone grab your wrist. You looked to your side to see the boy you ran into earlier, you were able to recognize him now that you weren’t in such a hurry. It was a boy named Yang Jeongin, you had been in the same schools since years before but you had never really talked to him. You followed his arm up from his hand that was still holding your wrist all the way up to his face, his cheeks slightly blushing as he was looking down. After raising his face, letting his eyes meet yours, he quickly dropped your wrist only showing his shocked expression for a split second.
“Are you okay?” you questioned the boy.
He scratched the back of his neck before a smile took over his face, his eyes almost completely disappearing under the innocent look. Cute.
He cleared his throat before speaking, “Actually I was going to ask you the same thing! You seemed sorta frantic earlier when you bumped into me and I wanted to make sure you were ok!” The blush on his cheeks turning slightly darker, though it seemed like he was trying to play it off.
You let out a loud groan and hit your palm to your forehead remembering your situation. “Today has been so tiring and I just wanted to go home and take a nap, but me being stupid like usual I left the classroom without checking to make sure I had everything and then when I got outside it was pouring! Then when I reached to get my umbrella it wasn’t there so I went back inside to try to get it from the classroom but I ran into you and the door was locked and-” you cut yourself off, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to vent everything out to you. It’s just been a really terrible week and I’ve barely spoken to you before and now I’m making you listen to me rant.”
Jeongin let out a small laugh before replying, “It’s alright! It seems like you’ve been having a rough day so I don’t mind! Not that I would mind if you weren’t having a rough day though!! But uh it seemed like you need someone to talk to and-” he looked up after hearing a giggle leaving your lips. He seemed really kind and genuine and you wondered why you hadn’t tried talkinh to him before, but then again you were more of a ‘put your headphones in and ignore everyone else’ type of person.
“Anyway,” Jeongin took a deep breath before catching your gaze again, “I’ll walk you home,” A surprised expression washed over your face at his statement.
“Oh! You don’t have to do that! It’s only a 10 minute walk to my house and I can just use my backpack to cover my head!”
“You can’t do that! Your backpack and all the work inside of it would get soaked! Even worse, you’ll get soaked and you could catch a cold! Your health is most important!” Jeongin opened his umbrella and then let his hand slide into yours pulling you closer into him, you both ignoring the heat rising to your cheeks.
“Now!” he spoke, “which way to your house?”
Too flustered by the little action to deny his request again you raised the hand he wasn’t holding and pointed in the direction of your home, still looking at him. With a smile even wider than it was before, he nodded and started walking pulling you along with him. Your eyes were glued to his face and you were suddenly thankful that his hand was holding yours, guiding you as you walked so you wouldn’t bump into anything.
You had somehow made it home safely and the walk suddenly felt too short. You and Jeongin stood outside of your house, not moving nor talking.
“Uh,” you broke the silence, hesitating, “I guess I should go in now.” you were thankful for the loud sound of the rain because otherwise you were sure he would hear your heart, ready to beat out of your chest.
“Yeah, I guess you should,” he responded so quietly it could have been a whisper. You waited for another minute, your eyes not leaving his. He let go of your hand that you had forgotten was intertwined with his, “Hurry, you might catch a cold!” he smiled again, this time looking softer and more caring from before. You didn’t want to leave his company but you couldn’t make him stand in the rain forever.
“Can I have your number?” you asked him abruptly and you could tell it caught him off guard but he responded by eagerly nodding his head.
After your farewells with Jeongin you ran to your room and jumped into your bed staring at the number and the quick selfie Jeongin had snapped of his bright smile to attach to the contact in your phone, and for once you found yourself excited to go back to school after the weekend.
As for Jeongin, he was walking with a slight skip in his step, not caring that he had walked in the total opposite direction of his home to take you to yours or the fact that the right side of his body was drenched from trying to give you enough room under the umbrella. The only thing occupying his mind was that his crush of six years had taken his number.
