i wanted to outline a little bit of what y’all will find here! there’s one main universe that i’ve been writing stories in recently that i’m really excited to share!

let’s get started!

what is chantico?

this is a newer setting with a character i’ve had for a long time.

chantico is my urban science fiction universe! in 2037, several floridian cities such as st. petersburg, clearwater, tarpon springs, and tampa decided to band together and create the megacity of chantico, a haven that was meant to be all things community and innovation. a dome was installed over the city and part of the bay to create a place that had perfect weather all year round, so yes—

it does not rain.

in 2097, 60 years after chantico’s foundation, after the desire for creature comforts had been distorted to a perverse degree. mentadjourn, a cybernetics company created in the borough of centro, the heart of chantico, has been the leader in studying the marriage between the biological and the mechanical for about 26 years.

after success with language learning models and humanlike AI, mentadjourn has moved on to their next venture: partnering it with the human mind. the city is their trial run for said technology, as they all have had chips in their brains for the past three years with no problem.

but within the last year, a new virus had been going around, attaching itself to messages sent through links- the connections from mind to mind, and 47% of the city’s population were at risk of getting it. once activated, it would eat away at them, their sense of self deteriorating, until they ended up as a blank slate of who they used to be, or worse. they call it rain, as it brings with it a static sort of white noise in the background, much like the rains of 60 years ago. hearing it is never a good sign.

insiders, technicians trained to service cybernetics among the modded population, stepped up when mentadjourn didn’t- using backdoor codes and their own hacks to stop or at least slow down the process until a patch could be released. but after the lead mayor is found dead after a service, mentadjourn finally comes into town.

47% chance of rain is a noirlike that follows nolan, an insider with a little more at stake when it comes to rain. he’s a soft android: the combination of cloned flesh and machine, running on a highly advanced AI. if rain reaches him, he has no time before he’s erased. and since he was the last insider to have worked on the mayor, he’s in mentadjourn’s sights.

it’s a mystery, with a through-line of memory and what it means to be human, truly alive at its core.

i’ll do a more comprehensive deep dive on chantico one day, as there’s a looooooot of world building i’ve been doing that i can’t fit here!
