2021 Update
When last we met, I had 8,395 miles to go before my magical goal . . . So what have I been up to in the past two months? Riding as much as I can. It has been a cold winter, but following my nearly 400 mile burger run, I did a 200 mile run for a cup of coffee with my cousin. She is from Connecticut and was heading south on 81 to bring her daughter (who is also my cousin ;-) ) to Virginia Tech where she is on the softball team (Hit a grand slam against NC State Today - GO Alexa!!!!!!) I then had an Inauguration Day run for some of my favorite BBQ at Chap's Pit Beef in Frederick.
I made a change to the bike in the process by taking off my Cobra Tri-Ovals and installing a set of Vance & Hines twin cut slash round pipes on the bike. The Cobras served me well over the years, but the bike was popping and backfiring like no one's business, when I took them off, I found out why: the left side pipe was no longer fully connected so there was a lot of leakage. The Vance & Hines have a nice low rumble, and I no longer sound like a carnival shooting gallery as I let off the throttle. Looking forward to many miles with these pipes!
While all rides are good not all are for happy occasions. A group of us saddled up to pay our respects to Stanley Police Officer Nick Winum who was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop in the small Appalachian town. It was a very moving send off for this American Hero.
As the ridiculous Covid restrictions begin to roll back, we were able to have a Blue Knights meeting and Bob, Mark and I got in a little ride to Foster's after the meeting. A couple days later, my work vehicle was in the shop getting a recall done, so I took the bike into the city, direct route in, indirect route down the GW Parkway and past Mount Vernon on the way home. And today I really needed a haircut, so I took the bike for the 20 mile round trip, which I turned into over a hundred miles.
So what does all this mean? How am I doing? I'm doing OK. I am making a good run at the goal, providing my plans don’t get cancelled, I should make my goal. I have a ride to the Eastern Shore planned in the next couple of weeks, and then down to North Carolina a couple weeks after that. Since we last met, I have put on an additional 1,197 miles on the bike. That leaves me 7,198 miles to go and I WILL make my goal.
Drop on by and see how I am doing, I will keep you updated as I can! Until then . . .
RIDE ON!!!!!

[If you ever get the chance to go to Chaps Pit Beef, trust me, you'll love it. But this right here, bro. You're right in there. And this gets what? Caramelized onions, Swiss cheese on there.]
Katie v. Man v. Food Episode 5: Baltimore
I know, I know, its been nearly a year since I've put my MvF travels on hiatus. But, just like Mad Men, I'm back after a long break to tell you what I think of Baltimore's eateries. I can only write about two of the three locations, because Obrycki's has closed their main restaurant, only to be found in the city's airports. So if you fly into Charm City, eat there, and let me know how it is.
First, Chap's Pit Beef. Not only is this place on the show, but Adam Richman tweets about it often. So I knew there must be something good going on there. My mom had a pulled pork BBQ sandwich, but I had the pit beef sandwich. I smothered it in their house BBQ sauce (even though they had the best sauce, Sweet Baby Ray's). I got my meat well done, and it was perfectly tender. I can only describe the taste as a cross between roast beef and smoked beef. It was really good, no fat, no grease, just a simple, tasty sandwich. Not only that, the sandwich was under $7. Good call, Adam!
Now, for Steak & Main, I had to defer to my father. Since I won't be getting to Baltimore again any time soon, I thought I would ask my dad to tell me about his dining experience at the place where Adam did a food challenge. In fact, my dad was there only a few weeks after Adam did the challenge! Unfortunately, my dad doesn't remember what he ate when he was there. He does remember liking it, but I couldn't get him to elaborate. So, with that helpful advice, if I do get down there again, I'll be sure to come back with a more thorough report.
Even though there were no Michael Phelps sightings, this was another successful dining trip to a lovely city. My next MvF travels will be the Jersey Shore episode (about time, I know.) Enjoy!
I'm heading to Baltimore tomorrow, just because. Here's where I'll be eating- Adam Richman style!
