One Piece Chapter 968: Initial Thoughts

Spoilers for Chapter 968...if it wasn’t clear

Firstly, 3 weeks is too long a wait -_- I’ve came down every week expecting a new chapter and then BAM delayed, I’ve been dying here after 967 I have a theory post circulating after this but I thought to make this brief - Shanks crying over what Roger said can be as simple as him admitting he’s dying or maybe what he did tell Shanks is the reason the WG are reluctant to stand against him, maybe something beyond Laugh Tale. There could be a similar thing later to what he said to Rayleigh - The ‘One Piece’ may not actually be Roger’s treasure at all, it seems to be a WG buzzword to put a bigger target on Roger’s back and shy away from having to detail what they found. I know Oda said that the ‘One Piece’ is a thing but maybe it’s not Roger’s treasure, seems a bit odd that he’d dump it on Laugh Tale, the island is the treasure. Probably why Roger got a kick out of the bystander asking where the Treasure was. - Young T Bone spotted, been seeing T Bone a lot over the course of One Piece haven’t we? - Who is this ominous ‘he’? I’m guessing Poseidon since they both will be born in 10 years but Shirahoshi is 16, not 15, she demonstrated the ability much earlier and properly awakened it in Fishman Island Arc. But in the next page, Roger says that someone will be born and succeed him, so far no male character was born 15 years ago, only Carrot, Flampe and some of the Alabasta duck squad. - Roger immediately thinks his ‘son’ will succeed him, but Ace isn’t born yet, Rouge carried him for 20 months but that’s still at least a few months before Ace would be conceived. True, Roger could simply be thinking ahead but there is an alternate option of Roger having other children. - Roger to be the first to leave the crew is strange...and a little ominous, would Luffy repeat this gesture? This also makes you wonder, who has the Oro Jackson? The last person off the ship is probably the one who parked it, and I doubt it was Crocus or Rayleigh. Maybe Scopper? - Those shipwrecks on the rapids could be important - Until Joyboy reappears!? This is a key part of the aforementioned big theory I’ve yet to write so I won’t hop on that yet - Kuri natives all having patches on their clothes was an immediate red flag for me, Doji and Denjiro disappearing is odd though. The fate of Denjiro is still questionable but Oda is playing coy. - It would seem that Orochi got flanked by Kaido early and they’ve been making weapons for decades, which is a worrying thought with the scale Kaido wants his war to be - Oh they pushed all the wrong buttons, trying to go after Momo and scarring Toki. It’s a surprise that Orochi only went for it the once actually. But Oden is now in full fury right in the palace. - We end with Oden rushing at Orochi, but I wonder if it actually is Orochi. Next chapter will surely depict either Kaido’s scarring, Oden’s death or both. I can see Oden scarring Kaido out of retribution for his wife being scarred but I wonder if the Orochi Oden may cut down is the old hag using the Clone-Clone fruit for some basking. Either that or somebody is gonna stop him; Kaido or a young Kyoshiro, there’s one more piece of this puzzle yet and we are done waiting

i dont think oda has ever or yet to go the reincarnation route and that would just kill the story. its more like "dreams and wills" never die. the will of roger was passed on to luffy, the will of whitebeard was passed on to ace and then to sabo. its just that maybe due to circumstances joyboy coudlnt finish whatever he started and then that will was passed on to roger and luffy and as such. its like a relay race. they do the best they can and pass the baton to the next in line. now its luffy

I hope so!! I’ve always thought that’s what “inherited will” means, and I still do.

But i’ve seen some fans who believe it’s all about reincarnation, and honestly, it’s not 100% impossible with Oda if he even introduced time travelling in the story. The main argument for the reincarnation theory was roger’s words to rayleigh (”I will not die”), but I always thought this is related to Dr. Hiruluk’s quote about how someone won’t die as long as people remember them. But now after this latest chapter the words “the day joyboy is born again” sound a lot more about reincarnation than anything idk

But I agree this would be a bit of a shitty ending (for me at least) and I’m hoping it’s not really the case and it’s all about inheritance. And, if that quote is about luffy, it just means he’s a descendant with the same “powers” joyboy had.

If things had been slightly different - if tiny Franky had wanted to return to the sea and had accepted Oden's invitation to join the crew, and if the Roger pirates had come across Brook on their way through the Florian Triangle (he definitely would have joined them since 1/ he'd already been adrift for over 20 years, and 2/ his old pal Crocus was with the Roger pirates) - Franky and Brook would have been crewmates on the ship of the future pirate king a whole 25+ years earlier.
