Even now, as Davos watches his King betray himself for power to a Red God that will surely end in more bloodshed than naught. Even now, as Stannis takes the Red Woman to bed, and forsakes his true wife. Even now, when Stannis uses black magic to kill his own brother, Davos has been loyal.
But the one thing he cannot be is a liar. He distrusts the Lady Melisandre on several fronts. He cannot stand by while Stannis forsakes those who would guide him forward in exchange for power that is dangerous to hold. He cannot stand behind magic, when his whole life Davos has known that true power comes from the work two real hands can do. And though he might be missing fingers off one, he still has the other fist, and sure enough, he will use it.
Now, he sails towards doom, with his eldest son with him. His own flesh and blood, fully converted to the red faith even if Davos is skeptical. He begged Stannis not to allow Melisandre aboard the ships, and for once, his King listened. But Davos cannot help but feel weary as their ships approach King's Landing.
