Charmain reading, illustration based on House of Many Ways by Diana Wynne Jones!
Relistened to house of many ways and found two art of my children on this app so I’m posting some (these are all sketches of Charmain Peter and Waif btw, look on my page for my designs of other hmc characters!)
Reading House of Many Ways for the first time and the main character’s name is Charmain, which my brain keeps reading as Chairman.

Inktober day 5: unexpected.
I listened to House of Many Ways again for inspiration and this scene (where Charmain accidentally lights a magical fire with a soap bar and Peter stumbles in, unannounced and soaking wet from the rain) felt perfect for this prompt! Also it's about time I drew anyone other than Sophie and Howl for a HMC series inspired drawing lol
Some kind of "modern AU" in which Charmain works at the library, but before she was hired as a full-time librarian, she was assigned to answer calls.
She argues with everyone about their book tastes and ignores pretty much everyone in case she has a really interesting book to read — wich is 99% of the time — during the time someone wanted to call the library's number. Her blocklist is also hilariously huge, because she blocks everyone who irritates her without further discussions. She blocked at least ten numbers because they asked about "spicy YA romantasy with enemies to lovers" and Charmain said that's a disgrace to literature. The other time someone called and asked about one of Charmain's favs and she talked about it for about two hours before the person on the other end of the line finally gave up.
One time a person, who was lucky enough to call her in the library in her small reading break, was asking for such a specific history, literature and even magic books that she just told him to kinda. Get here in person and found it because she's not going to do it now. The guy was named Peter and later that week she found out that he just recently leaned that he's a part of some wealthy family line and therefore need literature to understand the status.
(Charmain gives him a number of this other guy named Justin whose family was the last to take these strangely specific history books and decides they're gonna just solve the problem between eachother. They didn't)
The most annoying part, however, was that guy with famously broken connection and strong Welsh accent, Howell, whom she blocked for about ten times beforehand.
And yet he still calls, every time from different number — Charmain wonders when he will run out of SIM-cards or whatever he has to call that frequently — and ask whether they have this magic book from this author she never ever heard in her life and doesn't really takes "no" for an answer for longer than a day. He also asks If that cleaning lady named Sophie working today because he didn't have time to tell her some important point before the pushed him out of the door with the broom. Sophie, washing floors in nearby, asks to say "no". Charmain says no.
peter & charmain vibes
You have absolutely no idea how much I relate to Charmain Baker
I too just want to sit around, read all day, eat food, and ignore the concerning amount of laundry I have to do as I lounge peacefully in my magic house
Her whole day is ruined because there’s some guy here
