earlier tonight my friends and I accidently locked my car in a pretty common park/botanical garden in my city. to get it out we had to walk through the park in the dark then drive my car out because the gates would open from the inside due to pressure points. as we were waiting for the gate to open a minivan pulled up and two adult males got out. it was pretty late at night and almost instantly my 2 friends and I were all alerted. we didn’t necessarily suspect them of anything but because we were 3 young females and they were two older males, alone late at night, our minds first reaction was to have our guard up. we were very cautious about talking to them and hardly got out of the car (turns out they had locked their car in the park as well, and had the same idea as us.) anyways, the point of this whole thing is that afterwards my friends and I were discussing how horrible it is that society has conditioned us to respond in such a way, to be defensive/ almost afraid of the situation when the men we encountered were MOST LIKELY harmless --- they were very nice. just something we noticed tonight, and it made us pretty bummed/mad that we had been, “conditioned,” to think this way. we eventually gave them the benefit of the doubt, but just something for anyone to think about. thought we would share it.
