2016 Ruffino Chianti Superiore is made of 70% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and has an ABV of 13.5%. The grapes for this wine were grown in Chianti: Valdarno and Monteriggioni. The vines grow in clay in a region dominated by hot, dry summers with hot daytime temps with cooler temps at night allowing for maturation. The wine underwent 9 days of fermentation and maceration in stainless steel. After malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged for approximately 9 months in concrete and stainless steel vats. This wine is bigger due to the addition of Cab and Merlot for color, body and richer flavor. The bouquet is typical of Chianti with black cherry, plum and violets. Flavorful and medium bodied and smooth tannins that match well. A long, lingering finish offers notes of cherry and blueberry. This wine was first produced in 2000. The Chianti Blend is a classic, long-established blend of wine grapes used in the wines of Tuscany. The blend’s primary grape is the favorite grape of Tuscany, Sangiovese. Chianti can also include lesser-known Tuscan grape varieties Canaiolo, Colorino, Ciliegiolo and Mammolo. The typical Chianti displays aromas of red fruits, violets, dried herbs and bitter cherries. Chianti has evolved over time, adapting to consumer preference and advances in vineyard technology. There was significant controversy when the Chianti appellation laws allowed the use of red Bordeaux varieties Cab Sauv, Cab Franc and Merlot (up to 15%). Many purists dislike those changes while others like the dark fruit flavors the Bordeaux varieties bring to Chianti. Prior to 2006, white grapes, Trebbiano and Malvasia, were included in Chianti but are now forbidden. Chianti wines by law, must be made from at least 70% Sangiovese. For Chianti Classico, this minimum rises to 80%.
