The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot

Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

Probably 2.5 stars? I'm not sure. I grew up with the Princess Diaries movies and never got around to the books. They were always there and were popular but I had never thought to seriously pick the first one up to read until now. I had tried once and yeah, Mia's whininess got to me that first time and made it unbearable to even attempt getting 20 pages into. However, last night I was feeling nostalgic, and after watching the Princess Diaries movie on Netflix, decided to pick up the first book and seriously read it. Whoa. Okay, now let me explain that I didn't realize that the books were so completely different from the movies! Like I hate when movie versions do that, but this was all kinds of different that it really turned me off until I started looking up the comparisons on the web to take the shock value off. Differences do bug me when the movies can't keep with the book purity. It eats away at me so then I don't want to finish. But the thing was, after I got past all of that, I actually really liked the story! Mia is annoying and acts like your typical teenager, and whines non-stop that I wanted to slap her. But you know what? I made myself stop. Stop and reflect on how I was at her age, and also how old I was when I started watching the movies (eleven to be exact), and you know what? I was just as selfish and insincere and as bitchy as the next teenage girl in the room! Mia was faced with unwelcome circumstances that though are a little out there, were reasonable in a sense. Either way, it was an enjoyable fluff read for me and I've been told it gets better the more I progress through the series so I'll be doing that.

From Exile on Mainstream

Morning Earworm: Looks like my recent re-obsession with my adolescent love, Matchbox Twenty, was warranted. They’re going on tour this summer. It’ll be the sixth time I’ve seen them live, though the last time was in 2003. Now I’m old. It’s giving me a, ahem, reason, to get more familiar with the material they released in my post college years, when I was too cool, too indie to check it out. Who am I kidding, I was never cool. 

This song puts me in a good mood. Happy Friday.
