Chilltobember: Ladybug

I was planning on writing something KH-themed, but the prompt for this week is Ladybug and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity do Blake/Ruby.

This is set during Volume 6 when the group has made it to Argus. I may extended this into a longer fic sometime.

Ruby pulled the blanket over her head. Never had she been so grateful for a proper bed to sleep in. Braving the Anima wilderness had taught her how to take rests whenever she could, but tonight sleep refused to come. 

After experiencing the Apathy’s soul-sucking grip, she wondered if she could ever truly sleep again. 

Ruby sat up, still clutching the blanket around herself. The warmth of the Cotta-Arc house was nothing like the farmstead’s cold, though her hands trembled nonetheless. She squinted in the dark, needing to reassure herself that her friends—her family—were still there. Yang snored softly beside her. Weiss and Blake shared the other bed, but Ruby only saw Weiss’ sleeping form. 

She hadn’t planned on roaming the house. Worry compelled her to check on her other teammates and find Blake. Jaune, Nora, Ren, and Oscar slept in the second guest room. Ruby cracked the door and counted all four in their places. No Blake. 

She found Qrow sprawled out on the couch downstairs. She readjusted his fallen blanket and moved to head back upstairs. 

A figure caught her notice outside. Relief washed over Ruby as she recognized the silhouette. She pulled on her boots and wrapped the blanket tighter around herself. Argus’s winter chill hit her full force when she stepped outside. 

“Blake?” she whispered, not wanting to disrupt the silence. 

Blake’s cat ears swiveled toward her voice, and Blake turned around. “Ruby? What are you doing out here? Is everything okay?”

Ruby sat beside Blake on the porch. “I was just going to ask you the same thing.”

Blake sighed. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to worry you. I just . . .”

“Couldn’t sleep.”

“Yeah.”

Ruby placed half the blanket around Blake's shoulders so they were both sharing the warmth. Blake froze for a moment, then leaned into Ruby. The two girls sat in silence for several minutes and watched the snow fall.

A Curious Distraction

Chilltobember 2022 Week 1: Meditative

Original Work with Original Characters (made for D&D but not relevant to this work)

Summary: A distracting conversation about the nature of meditative hobbies between 2 characters who simply hate speaking about themselves.

Peras loomed over Drimm’s shoulder watching him work carefully with his needle and thread. She softly stepped from behind him and moved to sit across the table from him, her attention drifting back and forth between him and his work. “So, what are you working on?”

“I’m embroidering my new scarf,” he explained plainly, focused more on the careful movements of the needle in his hand.

She sat quietly waiting for him to elaborate. After a full minute of silence she decided to simply ask “Why?”

“Well we are going to be headed to Cevinan soon and…" he trailed off as he pulled his head back to look over his work for a moment. “Well, I’ve heard it’s cold as shit.” He looked up and flashed a quick polite smile before turning his full attention back to the scarf.

“That’s not… quite what I meant.”

“Oh?” His eyebrow raised as if he was surprised. He knew that wasn’t what she meant, and he also should have known better than to joke so indirectly with her. 

Peras pulled at the seams of her gloves “I meant, why are you embroidering a scarf? Couldn’t you buy something like that at a market?”

“You think people sell such things? For money? Truly?” The catty retort was carried solely by the exaggerated surprise in his tone, as his face remained calm with focus. She snorted out a laugh.  “You’re right I could have bought something at the market, and it would have been made by hand by someone else just like me. It would have saved me quite the time and effort and thread.”

“So…?”

    “Well it’s for the same reason I embroider my coat I suppose.” He said, habitually avoidant.

Peras looked over his plain grey overcoat, the black buttons on the front were the closest thing to decoration on it. “Your coat isn’t embroidered.”

He smiled and finally looked up at her properly then pulled his coat open with dramatic flourish. The inside lining was decorated with brightly tangled colours and patches of yellow, blue, and green. 

“Oh that’s beautiful,” she whispered as she considered just how well the bright colours stood out against the grey fabric. “It still doesn’t answer my question though.”

Drimm sighed and rolled his eyes, his smile never leaving his face. “You need to learn to appreciate a good mystery, friend.”

“I can appreciate it, but if it remains a mystery that means I learn nothing from it.” Came her unusually quick retort. Her chin tilted up and the pride in her eyes shone through the spaces in her veil.

He squinted “You’ve been hanging around those temples of wisdom again, haven’t you? Those people are no fun.” He waited for her to follow his change of subject, but she simply sat and waited for him to answer her question. “Alright, alright it’s… meditative. I suppose.”

“Like prayer?”

Drimm held his breath as he considered the statement. He supposed it was technically true that prayer is a type of meditation, but it’s not at all what he meant. “No. When you are praying it is conversational isn’t it. You have an objective, something you want to communicate or achieve.” She nodded in understanding. “When I say meditative I mean being quiet and sorting through your thoughts and emotions. Which I suppose is part of prayer but there is more to it than that I think.”

“Oh… I think I understand what you mean.” 

“So what hobby do you do that’s meditative?” Drimm asked, finally turning the conversation away from himself.

Peras opened her mouth to answer and immediately closed it again as she thought better of her answer. “Cleaning I guess?”

Drimm finally put down his needle and thread “Cleaning is your hobby? Well, no wonder you end up spending so much time in the temples. We’ll find an activity for you. Go find a spare rag and I’ll teach you some of the basics. Then maybe you can go ask Mr. Prauthir for a book to read.” He shook his head in disbelief.

“Do you have a favourite book, Drimm?” Peras asked, turning the topic back around on him. 

“If you don’t go find a rag I’m not teaching you shit.” His threat was met with an offended scoff, then a staring contest as they waited for the other to cave. As soon as he reached to turn his attention back to his scarf she stood and hurried away looking for a spare scrap of fabric.

Monster Mushroom

Chilltobember #1 Prompt: Mushrooms Fandom: Cult of the Lamb Warnings: A Mutating Mushroom Monster gets killed, Cults but nothing bad or explicit happens Word Count: 766 Summary: After a long journey to get provisions, Cecil the Monkey comes back to Passiflora to show his haul to his best friend, unaware that he may have brought something that intends to eat the entire cult! Luckily, their Leader is there to save the day. Excerpt: "Don't worry! Maybe it's not poisonous and we could eat it all up?"

"Even if it were, it's too big for Leader not to notice--"

"Not to notice what?"

Hello! I forgot to post this on here because school and life, but I have this ready to go for Chilltobember. If I did post about it, I’m sorry in advance, I’m posting it anyway. For Chilltobember, I plan for my prompts to have different fandoms. Do not worry, I do have Kingdom Hearts for one of the weeks. For this first week, I chose the mushroom prompt and I had the idea of a giant mushroom monster so I went with “Cult of the Lamb” for this one. I don’t have the game, but I love the concept of taking care of animal villagers while demonic/supernatural things are happening. It’s a small funny scene, but I like it and I hope to write more soon in my spare time. 

Note: I diverged from canon and created my own species just for this one shot. There are no actual monster mushrooms in game and for the missionary part of the game, the only food item a Follower could get would be meat. 

I hope this is okay.
