Christmas words: Gift

Gifts are great... although that depends somewhat on who you get them from... and what language they speak. 🎁☠️

The word gift has been in English since the middle of the 13th century, and is related to the word give. The verb give has a long history, reconstructed all the way back before written records to a Proto-Indo-European root that would have been something like *ghabh- which meant ‘to give or receive’ (the * means it’s a best-guess based on what we know of the languages that came from PIE).

Gift is a noun that came from a verb, but we also used it to create another verb, English speakers have been talking about gifting things to each other since the 1500s.

Gift popped up in a lot of Germanic languages in the Middle Ages, usually meaning something more or less the same as in English, often within the specific context of a gift in exchange for a bride. But be careful, because in modern varieties it often means ‘poison’.

How did a nice word like gift come to be used to mean poison?

The best guess is that it was something of a euphemism. It’s possible that this was influenced by Greek. Our medical word dose comes from Greek dosis, which literally meant ‘a giving’; Greek physicians and their texts were very influential in early European medicine.

Selfless not Selfish.

It never really occurred to me that I have the number one tool that can help me win any war; prayer. There are times when I’m going through something and I don’t pray. When in reality prayer should be the first thing I turn to as a Christian.  I should seek God first in any decision I have to make, or any trial that that comes my way. The truth is, I don’t. I don’t pray as much as I should, not even just for myself, but for other people.  God wants us to be selfless not selfish. He wants us to pray for others while we are going through stuff; always putting others before ourselves. Yet, I have trouble doing that. There are times that I can’t get over myself and what i’m going through. Its times like that where God never fails to humble me and remind me that people have it far worse than I do and I should pray for them.  I don’t know about you but it baffles me knowing that I can speak to the King of Heaven anytime I want and he’ll listen. Not only that , but he answers me. The King Of Heaven Speaks to me! I’m such a mess yet he still speaks to me. I don’t know about you, but that’s so mind boggling 

Here are some things I learned recently: 

Be kind, Be grateful, encourage others, love everyone. Everything we do should bring glory to God. We belong to God. Every breath we take belong to God.

Be an example, so people can take pride in Jesus Christ because what he is doing in your life. Help people grow and experience the Joy of YOUR faith. 

Have Confidence and boldly speak God’s message: -Without fear

                                                                                   -With pure motives. 

Never be ashamed!

Pray for:

Love that will overflow more and more

 to keep on growing in knowledge and understanding

 understand what really matters (to live a life that is pure and           blameless)

To be filled with the fruit of your salvation- the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ

Bring Glory to God by living like Jesus. (it’s so important that people look at you and see JESUS)

REJOICE- No matter what. We have so much to be thankful for. Make sure to always thank God no matter what your going through.
