My latest holiday treat I baked and parceled up for local family: Nigella Lawson's chocolate fruit cake. Dark, moist, decadent, this cake is packed full of fruit, seasoned with orange zest and juice, holiday spices, brown sugar, and cocoa powder, and boozed up with coffee liqueur. You can serve it plain, as Nigella does, or top it with frosting if you like. Last year, I topped it with almond buttercream frosting to call to mind the flavor of marzipan, a classic Christmas cake topping, without that confection's rather unpleasant, clay-like texture. This year, I topped the cake with chocolate buttercream frosting and toasted slivered almonds.
