Harsh Realities for California’s Unaccompanied Youth
This week, our social media posts will be focused on unaccompanied youth, and the unique challenges they face as they attempt to navigate the world around them. The difficulties of day-to-day living are multiplied for minors living without guardians and for transition-aged youth (TAY) without adult support. Some particularly impacted groups include pregnant and parenting teens and young adults, as well as young people who have aged-out of foster care. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook this week to hear firsthand accounts from young people in our community.
According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, there were over 11,000 youth experiencing homelessness on a single night in California in 2015, with the overwhelming majority (over 8,000) of these youth living unsheltered. More than 10,000 of these young people were TAY between the ages of 18-25, and the remaining youth included in this surveywere under the age of 18.
Young people experiencing homelessness often have different service needs than those who have experienced chronic or long-term homelessness, and meeting the needs of all can be a challenge for agencies that serve large populations with often insufficient financial resources. Services designed for young people are often limited and cannot meet the needs of all young people dealing with housing insecurity. Tasks like getting identification cards, finding employment and meeting educational goals can be especially challenging for young people, making the experience of being unhoused that much more difficult. For this age group, housing plus supportive services tends to be the most successful.
