Nora looked out the window, hoping that Jaune hadn’t ate the candy...

Behind her the blond pulled out a stoppered bottle and a rag from a pouch on her plate carrier. Popping the stopper silently, she up ended the small bottle against the rag.

Penny: General?

In the distance Ciel finally sinks to the floor, her eyes closed as if she had just fallen asleep. Juniper shoved the rag into a pouch, before pulling out a roll of duct tape and securing Ciel's ankles and wrists together.

Juniper: Here's comes the bride! All dress in white!

James Ironwood continued to keep a firm grip on Penny as they watch Juniper start to drag the unconscious form Ciel back down the hall from which she came.

Penny: General? Why?

Scrap. Split Armature

One reason why it’s taking me so long to get the first chapter out (besides real life stuff and commissions) is that I have a very specific goal for the first chapter. It’s a slow introduction to my OC’s, one of the critiques I got was that they came on too strong. Good because it’s in character but ultimately bad because it confused the reader. And I want the first few chapters to be a vague review of the Cutting Strings. Each story is a different genre and ship so I don’t want to force readers into reading something they don’t like.

Scrapping this because I realized I’m putting to much energy in setting up Argus when they’re only there for a few days. I was forcing myself to write the not so fun bits which is why I didn’t want to get the ball rolling. So posting for archive reasons and etc, etc.

Anyway. Ciel POV, 480 words.

The Argus Military Base was an Atlesian Base. Milstral was too flamboyant in its design, loved to show off the excessive wealth and add little nauseas and gold embroidery. They had huge unsafe windows to show off the green valleys and forest, letting in the sun that isn’t blocked by a floating rock.  

Ciel was almost charmed by the few glimpses and short rides around Argus.  

Deep in the military base all she saw was the polished metal. LED lights everywhere; dimmed, off, slowly breathing or as strong and bright as Ms. Polindena’s eyes. The hum of metal almost drowning out her thoughts. Enough of them was disabled or disposed of to feel the room heat up. Panels, components, wires and bolts strewn about organized and labeled piles. The mechanic and the engineer, her civilian teammates, preforming a deep maintenance on the CCT AI Core, protected deep within the base.  

“Ms. Soleil,” the CCT AI called out. Unlike the military drones, it’s voice was smooth with almost passable fluctuation. It was uncanny and rather unpleasant. “Your records indicate that you are not in need of assistance in your studies. Physical activity and sensory stimulation every twenty minutes are shown to improve performance.”  

Ciel’s rapping fingers brushed against her textbook. Like the rest of her team she excelled in her class, setting her own standards if the Academy wasn’t going to challenge her. The goal was to finish the rest of her written assignments before their arrival in Vale.  

She frown, “My performance is not lacking.” Ciel said. She tried to stay indifferent, but her ‘teammates’ poorly hidden or open snickering heated something in her chest and her words ended up bitter.  

“Relative to the majority, you are correct.” the AI said. And of course amongst her team, Team APCX (Apex) she was the lowest bar. The AI blinked, mimicking confusion in an empty way. That pretty smile stayed, shoulders were perfectly straight. It pulled the displeased frown on Ciel could feel on her face into a small scowl. “I am detecting a negative response. Has the statistics upset you-”  

“Debug mode pause.” Ms. Cotta-Arc quickly said. Her brows pinched, weary eyes on the engineer. “What did you do?”  

Her partner replied with that irritating smirk and cocky attitude, “Maintenance.” Ugh. Ciel slammed her book. She was giving that asshole exactly what she wanted but at least Ciel had enough control not to glare at her.  

“I’m going out for some real food,” Ciel said.  

The food up in Atlas tasted too soul-less.  

“Take your time and get me something Mistralian,” Xan said, that flamboyant sarcasms replaced by a bored drawling tone. Ciel cautiously spared a glance. Xan was too engross with her work to actually aggravate her any further… an odd relief. “Once we’re done with the AI and the hard-light wall we’ll probably be stuck at the hip gain.”  

“Penn, you should go too.” Their leader hummed, rolling out from under a console, “We’ll need to replace these SDC Dust components,”

She said angrily as she rubbed her head and looked at her watch while getting a bit red.

Ciel:Why can’t this guy be on time?!

Penny then put a hand on Ciel’s shoulder and let out a small gasp when she saw tears budding a bit at the corner of her partners eyes.

Penny:Ciel, it’s alright. I won’t be mad with you about it...

She said smiling at her friend who looked at her before sniffing a little and started to compose herself before rubbing her eyes. She looked at her watch and pressed it a few times before Penny’s hand covered it, she looked at her again and saw her gentle smile.

Penny:Why don’t we take the scenic route there?

Ciel:O-Okay....

She said before she sighed and turned her watch off and looked at Penny with a smile.

Penny:Sensational!

She said before she started to bring Ciel towards the movie theater.

They did miss most of the previews though.
