Meet cyclo-cross racer and CX magazine contest winner Ellen Sherrill

Ellen Sherrill, who races for Voler/Steven's Creek B.M.W./HRS/RockLobster, does most of her racing regionally, but once or twice per year, she’ll make a big trip and link together a few major races across the country. Thus, she was delighted to win the Cyclo-cross Magazine contest prize for bike shipping from BikeFlights.com.

“I’m lucky that I have the support that I do, but my team has limited money to send me around to races. The BikeFlights.com voucher is helping a lot - one less thing to have to pay for,” said Sherrill.

The South Lake Tahoe, California-based rider is currently on a trip linking four cyclo-cross race weekends: the Singlespeed Cross World Championships in Louisville, Kentucky; the Cincy 3 in Cincinnati, Ohio; the Derby City Cup also in Louisville; and the Jingle Cross in Iowa City, Iowa. It’s her first time competing in any of these places.

“I hadn’t heard of BikeFlights.com before I won the prize, and I’d already made arrangements to ship one of my ‘cross bikes another way, so I used BikeFlights.com to ship my other ‘cross bike.”

“I’ve been flying with bikes and frankly, it’s a pain - I hate it. You see them throwing your precious, beautiful bike into the cargo hold below and dropping things on top of it. BikeFlights.com told me how to pack my bike safely and that it’s safer to ship it than to put it on an airplane. In my experience, the cheapest I can put my bike on an airplane is for $75. BikeFlights.com’s rates are generally cheaper, and I also don’t have to drag my bike all over the airport. Now I know.”

The bike Sherrill shipped via BikeFlights.com arrived on time as scheduled a few days before her race at Campus Cyclery in Cinncinati, Ohio. “Campus Cyclery was great - they gave me a courtesy call when it arrived, and they gave me great local info, too.”

Last weekend, Sherrill did all three ‘cross races in Cincinnati. She was pleased to finish in the top 25 in two of the races, a placing high enough to net her some prize money for her efforts.

Friday’s Cincy3 Harbin Park 2014 was held in messy conditions that had Sherrill grinning from the start. “I got super excited because the set of mud wheels I always carry around with me never gets used in California,” she said. “I put on my mud tires, and the race was a slop fest. I love riding in mud, and I had a great race! I kept calm and used my good bike handling skills to keep my bike upright while everyone was falling down around me.”

Saturday’s Cincy 3 Kings CX After Dark at Kingswood Park didn’t go as well. “I had a tough experience on a flat, fast power course that did not favor me as I’m more of a technical rider. I got called up last and the rider in front of me made a mistake, and I was gapped before I even crossed the start line. I was chasing by myself, feeling sad and I got pulled from the race.”

However, Sunday’s Devou Park race more than made up for Saturday as it featured a difficult, technical course. “I was honored to be racing what was also the Pan American Championships, and the course was more like a European course - it was so technical it was scary in spots. The field was nervous, but I tend to deal better with technical courses than others. I had so much fun that I managed to get another top-25 and a check!”

Sherrill had picked up her other bike at On Your Left Cycles in Louisville, Kentucky. “It was funny - although I had not shipped that particular bike with BikeFlights.com, the staff there started telling me all about BikeFlights.com.”

Once her trip wraps up, Sherrill will use BikeFlights.com to ship her bike home to California from Iowa City.
