I thought Louis was saying that it was 30 vampires that he killed + Talbot. I assumed that he was talking about other vampires coming after him because of the book and that Talbot got caught in the crossfire or something. Is this expanded on later?

Louis and Raglan state in 1x02 that Louis has been killing Talamasca agents who tried to kill him.

It was established in The Talamasca that the book was an issue and comments were made by Ciprien that hinted at the source of the "problem" needing to be taken care of i.e. Louis needed to be eliminated.

The Talamasca underestimated Louis. However, Raglan always knew what Louis was capable of.

"You fear Armand. You should fear the other one."

And now that focus is on Lestat, too. Listen to what Lestat says in his voiceovers in both 1x01 and 1x02 about the other vampires targeting him and "those who watch" i.e. Real Rashid is following Lestat and Gabriella at the strip club.
