So I liked the Circle Back pattern so much I had to throw another one together, this time in a rainbow colourway and a black background.
It went together before I remembered to take progress photos, but here we go, the completed quilt top coming in at 62” x 78”.
Very nice throw size.
I almost used a completely different print for the final border that had most of the colours, but decided I wanted to pull the purple accent out of the patchwork, so I went with the purple border.
I’ve been imagining a fantasy setting where the society is matriarchal, land and money are inherited through the mother, etc. Here are some thoughts.
a wealthy woman would enjoy total independence, and would only need to have a relationship with a man if she wanted a child.
If you’re the eldest daughter you have a lot of pressure to produce a daughter heir.
men have very few options for making a life for themselves.
The most respectable path for a man is to marry and share his wife’s home and wealth etc. However, she can divorce him. He is afforded legal protections; she has to prove in divorce court that he’s an unfit husband/father.
If they divorce, if he has fathered any children with her (and he hasn’t been proven an unfit father) she is legally obligated to provide him a stipend for the rest of his life so he can keep a home nearby and maintain contact with his children and responsibilities of raising them, and he gets the stipend as long as he’s doing his dad duties.
However, if he didn’t give her any children and they divorce she’s only legally obligated to provide him a stipend for two years until he can get himself back on his feet, and probably try to marry another woman, or move in with female relatives, etc. because men can’t own land or buildings, he’s always dependent on the women in his life. (Which sucks, but what can you do? 🤷🏻♀️ that’s the matriarchy)
As a result men’s education is heavy on the domestic sciences, how to be a good husband and father, how to take care of the home and manage servants, etc
Mencan also make it on their own as tradesmen. They must apprentice with a master to learn a trade, (they do need money to pay the master so they’d have to have a female relative sponsor them).
Once they earn a mastery they can earn and keep their own money, but they cannot own land or dwellings. They have to rent if they want to live on their own.
If you’re a wealthy woman, you want a daughter heir. But for that, you gotta reel in a man. And they are very stingy with their seed, because marrying a woman and giving her a child is basically one of the few cards they have to play.
If you want a good father for your kid, you gotta woo a respectable man. But if you don’t care about who the father is, you can just pick up any willing Joe. However, you’re gonna be scraping the bottom of the barrel in terms of men because they will literally be only sperm donors with no rights to the children.
But having a child with that man does put you in some legal liabilities if, for instance, the man accuses you of leading him on and coercing him with the promise of marriage. If this is a man who doesn’t have the money to hire a lawyer to take you to court, then no biggie. But if that man has a wealthy family willing to protect him and his honor they can take you to court.
