yesterday we had a class debate (in groups) and two groups had the topic for abortion. one group is pro-abortion while the other is against it

one funny but also not funny thing about it is that the group thats against abortion are all males

its funny cuz the way that the men literally were put in the topic of against abortion, and hearing them try to say that abortion is immoral and theres more "humane" alternatives

its not funny cuz they actually believe that abortion is wrong and should be illegal and no one should do it.... some of them, i think, don't believe that and are just forced to defend it BUT theres some of them that actually DO believe that abortion should be illegal

anyways i had a hard time (as just a viewer there) to not butt in and speak some of my own comments AGAINST the opposition's statements, literally to the fact i had to PHYSICALLY hold my mouth and keep it shut cuz i shouldnt really butt in right cuz im not in their group and my group's topic is completely different

i wanted to coment against literally one thing i heard..... so one of them said that "the woman should take responsibility because she WANTED it" and i was like, kinda valid but also not cuz that wouldn't make sense, why would they want to get an abortion if they even truly wanted that baby

then i heard him say "they WANTED to drink, they wanted to get drunk" and im GAGGED cuz in no world would that even make sense cuz if the woman is drunk and intoxicated, they arent in the right mind to even GIVE CONSENT meaning that they are being 🍇d

i talked to them like afterwards and i told them that if they are intoxicated, they wouldnt be able to give proper consent to the intercourse, and yknow what they told em?--- they fkin said "no they WANTED to follow the man and drink and get drunk meaning they wanted to do the intercourse and get pregnant" LIKE IN WHAT IN TARNATION!?!?

Hi! Recently I took a formative debate in my Literature in History class, and I’m really happy to say me and my team got an A! I thought I might share some advice on preparing for a debate

Preparing for the Debate 

Before your academic debate its very likely you’ll be given time to prepare beforehand. (I got one week.) You may or may not be told what argument you will be defending but you will almost certainly be told the debate question!

Read up!

read about the chosen topic as widely as you can. (ask your tutor if you’re not sure where to start!)

make notes while you read

ask for help if you’re not certain! You might also want to split the work between your team if you know who you’re with at this point. I didn’t, but I would have taken that approach if I had

Make points for both sides of the argument 

make a list of points for one side of the argument 

then counteract these points for the opposing argument 

maybe think of some counter arguments for the first argument, if you’ve time. 

Break your argument into sections 

if you have a lot of material to discuss (for example, we had to discuss the whole of Henry IV part one) break your argument up

again, if you’re on a team, delegate the different sections of your argument!

just as an example, we broke our argument up into three parts. Acts 1 & 2, Acts 3 & 4, and Act 5. During the debate we argued each section distinctly and in chronological order 

practice your public speaking!

try a few vocal exercises (vacuum cleaner noises and buzzy lips!) 

remember to take a deep breath before you start speaking!

the mantra is thus: breath. think. speak!

a little bit of stretching on the day before hand can really improve your posture

and that’s it! Remember to organize your notes well on the day and be sure to have references for all of your points

Hell is actually having to debate against/ with kids in your class who have zero idea what a debate is and can't be fucked to find out

Yesterday I was coming up with counterarguments so that my group could prepare answers to them. Those 2 idiots tried to reply with "common sense" which means they haven't searched up a single thing.

Key moments include:

-who cares and 11% of the population?

-well human error is just always going to be there

-i don't think going to prison would be that bad

-prisoners don't need human rights
