Maybe you've heard the saying, want to make God laugh? Make a plan. Now I'm not entirely convinced it's simply making a plan would make God laugh. I'd like to think God has a slightly more nuanced sense of humour than that.

Countering the Culture of Success at Wellesley and #LeanIn in Society at Large: Anon ‘02

At Wellesley, we are told that we are #WomenWhoWill and in the real world, we are told to take “a seat at the table” blah blah blah. What do you think about this culture? It’s a lot. How do you respond to the demands to “succeed” and pressures to climb the corporate, political, managerial ladder? What do you do to center yourself and embrace where you are at?

Trying to be successful in the path toward academia that I headed for out of Wellesley, and all the effort that I put in to be successful and also able to pay my bills, had serious health consequences for me. “We’ll Sleep When We’re Dead” is funny walking home from the LTC at 6 AM, but it’s actually a really terrible way to approach life. I walked away from ambition almost five years ago and haven’t worked full-time since then.  I’ve made a lot of different choices about what to do with my life. Hopefully at some point I’ll return to full-time employment… but I’m no longer motivated to be a Woman Who Will Make A Difference In The World like the superstars on the banners. I’d be happy to be a Woman Who Will Not Be Hospitalized In The World. 

Addendum: at my 15th reunion, someone pointed out that 15 was easier to deal with than 5 and 10 because by 15 years out, far more of your classmates have experienced failure in some aspect of their lives, whether professional or personal. I wanted to pass this onto my sibs in more recent classes, because I think that when you see people in the Facebook groups we’re less likely to trumpet our failures until we have a happy ending for them. But someone who at 27 has a future so bright she’s gotta wear shades may have all of that fall apart in the next decade, and may well look with envy at someone who’s doing something unprestigious and unimpressive at 27 and reaches her late 30s with a stable career and satisfying relationships.

BREAKING: On Saturday morning before 9:40am, December 27, 2025, Stephen Jay Hankins, Jr. (Class of '02) was allegedly "driving vehicle at greater speed than is reasonable under conditions" when Hankins, Jr. was in a very bad car accident on Lee Vaughn Road near Kelsey Green Lane in Simpsonville. His dad, Dr. Steve Hankins, Sr., was in the car.

The weather was exceptionally mild on that day:

Family reports that:

the large appliance dolly [Hankins Jr.] had put in the back on a bunch of stacked moving blankets rolled forward when [Hankins Jr] put on his brakes. It hit him in the back of the head and knocked him unconscious causing him to crash into a giant cedar tree.

Hankins, Jr. received two broken wrists, a broken elbow and fractured arm and had surgery to repair his injuries on 12/29. He has been discharged on 12/30.

Dr. Hankins, however, is in critical condition. His daughter Sherilyn said on 12/30 that he:

was immediately taken to trauma ICU with fractures to his spine, pelvis, hips, femurs, ribs, ankles, and right wrist. He underwent surgery on his spine yesterday, and was intubated and sedated until this morning when he was taken back into surgery to repair his femur/hips and ankles. This surgery took six hours. He is currently in ICU and will be here for a while. We have a long road ahead and are praying for a full recovery. The main concern right now is the condition of his organs. When a body goes through this much trauma, sometimes the organs shut down. We are praying this does not happen.

The breathing tube was removed on 12/30.

Dr. Daniel Musselman, 38, passed away in his home on November 19 after a courageous battle with cancer. Dan was a resident of Jackson, TN, and native of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He was an adored husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He was a member of First Baptist Church and Associate Professor of Music at Union University. Dan loved music, an interest he pursued with excellence from childhood through graduate school and into his vocation of teaching, composing, and leading worship. He earned degrees from Bob Jones University, Westminster Choir College, and the University of Kansas. He was an accomplished composer whose music will continue to inspire and bless many. Dan also served as Music Minister at churches in New Jersey, Kansas, and Tennessee. Dan devoted himself to his wife and their three children. He will be remembered for his unshakable faith in God, desire to point others to Christ, genuine kindness, humility and his big smile. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Richard and Irma Oerth, James Musselman, and Deborah Donato; and his brother-in-law Lynwood Heisey. He is survived by his wife of fifteen years, Malinda (Heisey) of Jackson, TN, and their children Gideon, Zachariah and Meg; his parents Timothy and Linda (Oerth) Musselman of Alexandria, VA; his sister Rebekah and her husband Scott Frick of Greenville, SC; his father-in-law and mother-in-law Elwood and Mary Anne (Ressler) Heisey of Mt. Joy, PA; his brother- in-law Lenny and wife Jodi of Mountville, PA; and several nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles and cousins. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Musselman Family Fund. Contributions can be made through the Venmo app (Musselman-FamilyFund) or by mailing a check to Foundation Bank (2138 Pleasant Plains Extension, Jackson, TN 38305). The family will be receiving friends at First Baptist Church on Sunday, November 25, from 4:00 - 6:00 pm and again on Monday from 2:00 pm until the time of the service at 4:00 pm. The Celebration of Life service will be held on Monday, November 26, at 4:00 pm at First Baptist Church, Jackson, TN. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, December 1, at 11:00 am at the Mountville Cemetery in Mountville, PA.
