Something I made in class today
oop forgot to post this
turned 035 into a marketable pop vinyl
I made my students training logbooks to try to teach them good habits. Most of them are brand new to dog sports, with young dogs. This is a much different class to my previous one. For some of them, this is Baby's First Sport Class. So I feel like it's my responsibility to teach them the Baby Basics and set them up for success. So we'll be spending a lot more time on focus games, and teaching them the value of a good warm-up and cooldown. I don't want these baby dogs to go off to other sports, or even just stay in this one, and get injured because their owners never learned how to warm-up for activity, and how to assess their dogs for soundness.
I'm finding I have to structure this class much differently than my previous class, which was all experienced sport dog people. I could trust them to warm-up their dogs and get them focused before class began. For my newbies I will be making sure we do 5-10 minutes of physical warm-up at the start of class, then a focus game, then we launch into Hoopers stuff. I will be showing them some warm-up stuff, and at the last class I will have them "show off" a warm-up routine they came up with themselves. Like, I really want to stress how important warm-ups are. Nobody should go into a class, or a competition ring, or a sport training session without having done a real, proper warm-up with their dog.
I took a great workshop with my dog's physiotherapist and she said that the ideal warm-up is 10-15 minutes, and both you and your dog should be panting a bit by the end. You start slow and easy, just walking around, and make your way up to faster and more complex movements. None of this spin one way, spin the other way, and go to the startline that I see people do at agility trials all the time. Like yeah, that's fine startline warmup IF you also did a better one, like, 10 minutes ago, but I don't often see people doing anything else.
lil' man dude for class
There’s probably a number of posts to be made about what Endeavour says about the microlayers of the British (well, specifically English) class system, and one at least about how all four of Morse, Thursday, Strange, and Jakes come from a working-class background, but the stratifications meaning it’s not the same between any of the four. Thursday’s childhood (I reckon he was born in about 1910, I note) seems to have been extremely economically deprived (and Jakes’s possibly not a huge amount better, not that we know much about things for him prior to BV). Meanwhile Morse’s accent shift as a result of grammar school and then uni mean he’s very often mistaken for middle-class, which really gives an interesting lot of layers all round. And Strange, as far as we can tell, somewhere between Morse and Jakes.
(Also oof, as of episode 9.3 we’ve learned that Strange is the only one of the four who doesn’t have major childhood trauma in his backstory. And it may be that we only don’t know about it, though he is clearly a lot less haunted than any of the other three so I’m inclined to suspect not.)
(I am not necessarily the right person to write the post about the class stuff, but... yes. Has been making me think.)
rough animation I made for an assignment
might completely finish it in my own free time idk
