Prompt 5 - Rumour

Serena was in the middle of packing when the door slammed open and Yugo stormed in.

"Serena!" He shouted, pointing at her, "Why do you hate me?!"

She looked up at him as she calmly laid the last pair of socks into her suitcase, and the door fell off its hinges. "Pardon?"

"Why do you hate me?"

An eyebrow rose. "I don't."

"You said you couldn't stand the sight of me!"

Her forehead creased. "No, I didn't."

His pointing finger wobbled. "I heard from Shingo - I mean, I heard it first from Yuri but obviously I ignored him, but I also heard it from Shingo, who heard it from Dennis, who heard it from... um..."

Serena pulled a shirt from the wardrobe and folded it as Yugo started to count on his fingers.

"Dennis heard it from Grace, who heard it from Gloria, who heard it from Edo - wait, no, I'm missing someone - Grace heard it from Gloria who heard it from Kaito who heard it from Edo," he took a deep breath and resumed pointing, "who said you were talking to him about staying away from me! That you can't stand the sight of me!"

Serena paused in her folding, frowning as she tried to parse the sentence.

"And I think that's really unfair! I know we haven't spoken much, but I really enjoyed our duel in the Friendship Cup - and I thought you enjoyed it too! I wanted to challenge you to a rematch, once we've got our new D Wheels up and running, and they're nearly there - but now I hear you want nothing to do with -!"

"Fusion."

"It's not Fusion, it's Yugo!"

"Yes."

"... huh?"

"I talked to Phoenix about staying away from Fusion. I don't hate you, I hate the sight of Academia, and everywhere in the Fusion dimension reminds me of it." She glanced at the window, at one of the omnipresent floating camera spires, then shook herself back to the task of folding clothes. "I only came back to help track down the Doktor and see the Arc V reactor dismantled. Now that's done there's no reason to stay."

Yugo lowered his pointing finger. "So... you don't hate me?"

"No." Serena carefully positioned the shirt in her case. "And you're right," she added with a hint of bemusement, "I did enjoy our duel."

"So you'll duel me again?"

She smirked back. "I never refuse a challenge."

"Yaaay!" Yugo ran in for a hug.

On instinct her fist twitched at his approach, but she decided not to stop him. She stood stiff in his embrace.

"I appreciate your straightforwardness," she realised.

"You're so straightforward too!" Yugo mumbled into her shoulder.

"But perhaps you shouldn't get so wound up about stupid rumours."

"Yeah, Rin tells me that too."

Serena glanced down at his position and hers. "What am I supposed to do?"

"Huh?"

"How am I supposed to respond to this hug?"

Yugo pulled back just far enough for her to see his confused expression. "Hug back?"

Serena moved her arms to surround his chest, hesitantly: This was not an action she had been trained in.

Yugo leant forward into her straight-backed hug, grinning. "You need practice."

"Yes," she admitted.

"Hey," Yugo pulled back further but kept his hands on her shoulders. "Why not come back to the City with me? Then we can duel as soon as our D Wheels are finished!"

She hesitated: she had thought about going to Heartland next, as she hadn't been to the Xyz Dimension. But really she wasn't sure what to do with her new freedom.

Perhaps she needed to learn from someone how to be free.

"Yes. That sounds... fun."

"Yay! Let me help you pack!"

Yugo rushed to the wardrobe, pulled out a handful of blouses, and stuffed them into the suitcase.

Serena momentarily frowned at the mass of creases, then shrugged it off. "Sure." She joined him, grabbing a pile of skirts ramming them in.

Prompt: Day 3 - Winter

Pairing: Clearnightshipping (Serena/Yuugo)

I've written 9/20 of my total fills, so I'm at an okay pace now. (Which means I will be writing these into next week agh.)

In this setting, imagine that Serena and Yuugo have been recruited as Lancers during the Junior Youth Championship and are waiting out Academia's invasion in a safehouse with other tournament non-participants.

(All degree mentions are meant to be in Fahrenheit. 'Murica. (lmao))

Please relax and enjoy one of my favorite rarepairs.~

"Want some hot chocolate?" Yuugo asked excitedly. He was hopping from foot to foot as he watched the drink machine mix, pour and stir a cup.

Serena just gave him a weird look. "No thanks. I'm warm enough. You know, since you've grabbed or turned on every source of heat in this house for us."

He just stuck his tongue out at her. "You're welcome, Serena, for making sure we stay alive in this blizzard."

"You're kidding, right? It's barely twenty-seven degrees outside. My Fusion bedchamber was colder than this."

Yuugo didn't say anything for a bit, which was odd enough--but when he gave her the finished cup of hot chocolate he'd been practically salivating over, Serena knew she'd put her foot in her mouth somehow.

"What? What's wrong?"

"Nothin'."

Ugh. "Come on, Yuugo."

He was staring out the window into Maiami, watching the people pull on gloves and huddle together to trudge through the snow. "It's just... I forget sometimes that you're basically a soldier, you went through all this endurance training and shit. So stuff like this... you're not even uncomfortable, because you're used to having supplies even in the worst of weather."

Oh. Damn it.

She in turn sometimes forgot that her fellow newly minted Lancer was (still) an orphan. Though she hadn't been fond of her circumstances, at least she'd had some...

"I thought... well, that Rin took care of things for you."

Yuugo shrugged. Since he was wearing seven blankets, his shoulders barely moved. "She made sure I was fed and safe from Security, yeah--but she's still my friend, not my mom. There was only so much we could do for each other. We couldn't always find shelter or warm clothes or nice people to stay with, and so sometimes in the winter we just, you know...."

Froze.

Serena's hunch had been right. She'd stuck her foot so far in it that her ankles were probably in her mouth too.

No wonder he doesn't mind being stuck in this safe house while we wait for the tournament to be over. There's food, and space, and blankets... and he doesn't have to worry about extremities breaking off.

"...Sorry."

"It's fine, you didn't know." His bright blue eyes narrowed. "Hey, don't start feeling sorry for me or anything--"

"Who, me? Never."

The only problem was, how was Serena supposed to make fun of him for lovingly cradling hot chocolate packets and jamming the plus button on the heater when she knew now why he was so enthralled with all these basic requirements for winter survival?

Plus, now Yuugo was running back and forth between the heater, the stove and the microwave, marveling at how fast and efficient they all were. He looked stupid and--and adorable at the same time.

"I'm still not warm," he whined now, jiggling in place and looking absolutely pitiful.

But no less adorable.

That decided it.

"Oh, fine, come over here," she said exasperatedly. "If we sit close together with all our blankets we'll be warmer."

"Really? WAHOO!" Yuugo leapt up into the air, practically clicking his boots together under all those blankets without falling down somehow. He practically zoomed over to sit down with her on the couch.

A second later, though, he got a glint in his eyes and a curiously hopeful look that Serena didn't like...

"Hey--to stay warm, can we... cuddle?!"

"No."
