The Ulster hails from the days when the differences between road going cars and their competition equivalents were almost imperceptible. This win on Sunday, sell on Monday principle was crucial for Aston Martin's business throughout its early years. The car followed a works team 1, 2, 3 in class (3rd, 6th and 7th overall) in the 1934 Ulster Tourist Trophy race, held at Dundrod in Ireland. The road going Ulster was in fact a competition car based closely on the works team cars. with special valves and springs, Laystall crankshaft, large diameter SU carburettors, twin electric pumps and a 15 gallon fuel tank, (hidden by the spare wheel) in the long tail. Its engine could rev safely to 5500 rpm and 100mph was guaranteed. Priced at a startling £750, the privilege of owning an Ulster did not come cheaply. Despite the relatively modest size of the engine, these Aston Martin racers proved very capable. It is believed that Aston Martin produced a total of 21 Ulsters and a further seven Team Cars, in 1934 and 1935. Remarkably all of these are understood to have survived and they rank among the most sought after of all pre-War Aston Martins.
