Stories from my birthday
My birthday is in winter, but it hasn't snowed often - as far as I remember, anyway. In my twenties, once, when I was on the couch, ill. Today it snowed while I was sleeping, so while I wasn't able to go for a birthday walk underneath twirling snowflakes, my world was decked in white at least.
My sister sends me a video of her and her kids. My niece starts the recording scowling at her twin brothers, says, "-cently this time, okay?" then turns towards the screen with a radiant smile. "Happy birthday, aunt Oedie!" One of my nephews says it with his tongue hanging out of his mouth. My sister says they practiced before the recording, and that's what my niece was admonishing her brothers for. To no avail. Three out of four decent. One out of four silly.
I go by the zero waste shop, because today I deserve vegan pastries. I receive a piece of birthday cake as well, for which I was prepared. I brought an empty butter container especially for it. Unfortunately it wasn't to my taste. The pastries were delicious, though.
My parents finally send me their wishes when it's the evening already. We celebrated as a family last weekend already, so it's okay. My dad says, "I didn't realise it was already the tenth!" The year has only just started, and time is flying already.
I haven't gamed in a week or so, because I have to prioritise other things, but today I make an exception. I'm close to earning the platinum trophy on one of the games I've been playing. It takes a bit more work than I expected, and for the very last trophy, I need to cheat a little and consult an online guide. But there it is, my first birthday platinum trophy. In a fantastic game. It was nice to at least relax a little on my day.
My favourite day.
The tenth of January.
Just finished Cocoon (Wiki, Steam), so ofc i gotta add my two cents about it. I'll keep it under the cut for people who want to enjoy this masterpiece undisturbed (that is unspoilered).
Cause i do genuinely recommend it!!!

Hello! I didn't even know COCOON won the Game Awards and only found out while checking out your blog after seeing that you liked one of my stimboards.
I'm still in shock about that... but congratulations to all the games that were nominated, but didn't win!
~ Random COCOON fan who's also interested in Hi-Fi Rush, another game that didn't win.
Oh hi! I wasn't expecting an inbox message from someone after liking their post. I was really interested in the game after it was won against Pizza Tower so I wanted to see some fan post of it on here to see how much of a following it has, and your post was first to show up on the results for the game haha.
I'm glad to know that there are some fans for this game, as not many people have heard of Cocoon until the Game Awards, and I feel glad for all of the Cocoon fans who have been following the game since its release and seeing it win an award unexpectedly. I'm sorry for all the flak Cocoon gets just because it won against Pizza Tower dude. The game doesn't deserve the hate it gets. But I hope to play when I get the chance.
I've been a fan of both games Limbo and Inside for a while and I was shocked to find out that one of the people who worked on those games worked on Cocoon, so that already has piqued my interest.
I hope in the end that more people realize that the awards don't determine whether one game is better and worth playing than the other. All of the games nominated in the indie category and beyond have their own good qualities and fun gameplay, and an award doesn't add to or take that away.
-Sincerely, a Pizza Tower fan who is also a Hi-Fi rush enjoyer heyooo. (They Won for best audio at least!)
Anyways, here's some art of all the nominees and the bug protag themself.
i played Cocoon! (mini review)
throughout my time with it, i couldn't help but be reminded of Journey. not only do the two games share very similar art direction, but they're both... empty. not devoid of environment, but devoid of humanity. there are remnants, of course, but they're lost societies. the joy of both of these games is making your way through these societies and breathing life back into them, watching as the world shifts around you.
i never finished Journey. but i finished Cocoon. and i loved all of it. like i said, there is such a calming joy in watching your actions directly peel away the layers of the trap that the world finds itself in. Cocoon dedicates itself to that feeling, creating such a connected experience through its use of miniature, portable worlds. the puzzles taking advantage of these worlds are very clever, and more than once i found my jaw agape. it's such a good game at providing that feeling of awe and discovery.
i love how focused Cocoon is. i love how well paced it is. your knowledge grows in perfect time with the difficulty of the puzzles, and you start to be able to feel the game's cues and speak its language. it's unspeakably satisfying when the game's interdimensional tricks start to click, as you carry orbs around and start to delve deeper and deeper into their mechanics and environments.
Cocoon is not an immensely difficult puzzler, but it is beautiful in its simple complexity, a tapestry of different worlds and abilities each blending together to create an experience that feels complete. it feels considered. it feels harmonious.
i don't know what Cocoon is saying, but i know what it is feeling. hope, and peace. it's a game with little music, but as the world starts to unfold into its natural shape, more and more melodies creep in. things are returning to normal. life is coming back to this shell of a world. i really enjoyed this game. it made me feel calm, as i wandered its empty halls and watched as the metal turned to earth. it helps to know i did that.
spoiler warning for a very cool puzzle below, just to highlight my favourite moment in Cocoon
