Throughout the canvas, one may find doors that lead to a manor -- but they may also find doors that lead to a castle. Connected to portals throughout the continent, the Archival Palace houses treasures and artifacts from Lumiere dating back only a few years to centuries before the fracture.
The creature who lives here is known as the Chromatic Archivist, keeper, curator, and collector. She was created by Clea (who was learning to paint hands at the time) as a way to stash the treasures and trophies found on her and Verso's adventures, as well as a place to rest in between adventures.
While Clea was still young, she decided Ruby was too lonely in her palace, and created a little girl to serve as daughter and playmate -- Jane. For a few centuries within the canvas, life went on pleasantly.
Things took a turn in Clea's teenage years. Ruby never knew the cause of Clea's ire, only that she was in a rage when she visited the canvas. She had long-since outgrown Jane, but something in the girl's innocence and youth pushed Clea to a breaking point, and she erased Jane from the canvas before leaving once more.
Consumed with grief, Ruby locked herself inside the Archival palace. Centuries later, she emerged with a new Jane -- a clumsy facsimile cobbled together from artifacts and chroma from within the archives. But though her daughter is a balm, there is no smoothing over her hatred for the Dessendres -- Painters with the power to erase the canvas seemingly without a second thought. Trouble was, she was also created to love them, and cannot find a way to turn against them entirely.
She has however softened her to the people of Lumiere who are suffering due to the carelessness of the Dessendres -- who seem to forget that they created a world of people, not just toys to play with. She will not attack unprovoked, and provide some shelter to expeditioners who make it far enough into the continent.
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
Much like Esquie, Ruby has become a fairy tale in Lumiere, though, unlike Esquie, she is more often the villain than the hero.
Ruby served as a confidant for Clea throughout the years. She knows about the canvas and the world outside, and that there is a vague war going on between Painters and Writers, but does not know the details
Jane is functionally immortal. She is frequently dropping body parts and reattaching them, as the chroma that made her is unstable and inexpertly used.
A tiny gestral named Jojo lives in the archives. He will occasionally challenge her to a duel, promptly lose, and flee before she kills him. He is an expert at challenging stronger fighters to a duel, and running away when he finally realizes he's outmatched.
If one collects three well-hidden items throughout the map, Ruby will present the player with the picto Handful, which greatly boosts speed and crit rate, and grants a 20% chance for any attack to have an extra hit. She also drops two resplendent chroma catalysts upon death, should the player decide to kill her.
