Drake’s Electric Owl Coffee Brown Ale (Picked up at a nondescript liquor store in the Tenderloin, San Francisco). A 3 of 4. This bottle is a little old, given where I picked it up, but still delivers a nice, lighter brown ale with some great fruity coffee notes throughout. Not as malty as I’d expect, but I’m really happy with this in terms of the brightness of the coffee. Quite good.

{:en}Kakegawa Lush Life is a 6.5% porter from Kakegawa Farm Brewing, based in Kakegawa, in Shizuoka, Japan. It’s part of their regular lineup and can be found in both bottles and on tap. Kakegawa Farm Brewing is brewed using freshly roasted and ground coffee beans sourced from Hug Cafe, a local coffee shop in the Shizuoka city area.

Kakegawa Lush Life Aroma and Taste

Kakegawa Lush Life poured out a dark ruby brown colour with a large amount of frothy off-white head that just didn’t relent. It took ages to finally settle and when it did, it left a small oily ring of bubble around the side of the glass. Kakegawa Lush Life had a strong roasted coffee and sweet chocolate aroma, almost as if someone had poured in a few teaspoons of sugar into the beer. It wasn’t unpleasant but it did smell like some artificial aroma.

The initial flavour to Kakegawa Lush Life was more a smooth bitter coffee flavour than of actual beer – I don’t know how much coffee went into Kakegawa Lush Life, but guessing quite a bit. Once it had warmed up, Kakegawa Lush Life did develop some more traditional porter-like flavours with some hints of roasted barley and a touch of chocolate coming through too. The smoothness of Kakegawa Lush Life continued too when it was warm, though it left a lingering slightly-burnt coffee like flavour to it.

Kakegawa Lush Life The Bottom Line

Kakegawa Lush Life isn’t a bad coffee-infused beer, but I suspect the coffee is just hiding an average beer at best.

Coffee Ale by Boulevard Brewing Co.

I love coffee. I love beer. So a combination of the two should be perfect, right? I usually do like coffee beers and while I wouldn't say this one is bad it really brings forward the notion that the type of beer being blended with coffee is important. I've had many coffee porters and coffee stouts but never a coffee ale. Enter Coffee Ale by Kansas City, MO's Boulevard Brewing Co. It's part of their Smokestack small batch series and comes in a bigass whopper of a bottle. Think wine bottle size. Honestly, I couldn't finish all of it. Boulevard partnered with a local coffee roaster called The Roasterie. The coffee they used is an Ethiopian one. Ethiopia is where coffee originally came from and it's still some of the best in the world. It is nice that Boulevard didn't skimp on the coffee taste for this beer. It's massive and very much a black coffee taste. Mixing it with the overall malty ale creates some smoky, roasty, burnt, astringent qualities...but in a mostly good way if you can believe it. But the malt also takes on a pretty sweet finish. This is where I'm not a huge fan of it. This quality reminds me of many ambers and bocks I find mediocre. I understand that they did this to offset the sharp coffee flavors but I think it goes a bit overboard. One of the things that makes coffee stouts and coffee porters better than this is that the beer itself is a lot bolder and more distinctive so it stands up better to the coffee without amping up anything too much, in this case both the malty sweetness and the high alcohol content (over 9 percent ABV). I would say Boulevard's Coffee Ale is halfway good.
