I won a giveaway for Strange Practice?!! I have read the first chapter (aloud, w/ my mom who will probably also be reading this when I’m done), did it right away actually. It’s soooo good. The prose is rich and descriptive and has this nice mix of atmosphere and irreverence. 

I like all the characters I’ve met so far, too. One chapter’s not enough to get a deep understanding of who they are, but so far they’re very charming. I feel confident, on one chapter, recommending Strange Practice to ALL Y’ALL. LOUDLY. 

Side note-- it’s a very different kind of story in some ways, but... I’ll add a particular recommendation for all of you who enjoyed the Golem and the Jinni. I think some of the elements I personally enjoyed in that book are gonna be in this one too. Cities and the supernatural, two great tastes etc.

I really enjoy the atmosphere in these fics, the relatively simple stories are beautifully told, and paint a picture of their relationship and where they’re going very effectively.

Here are two highschool au kylux fic, “Boys on the Radio” by Coldhope and “Blue Milk” by zamwessel that I loved so much I had to put them in my kindle and do covers for them. I don’t really like reading au in general, but they were just so good that I really wish there were more of them. Both of them are wonderful and insightful character studies (but wip arrrg!). I had to write my own fic, “Against the World”, to calm my crawings! So, not surprisingly, it’s about bullying.

Here is the summary if you want to give it a go: "His association – for lack of a better word – with Hux had started when the ginger nerd found him crying in the bathroom one day, during class hours, and had just watched him making a mess of himself without saying anything."- Or how the two most despised boys in school develop a deep friendship over their hatred of humanity and planning petty revenge against their bullies.

He’s…feeling weirdly aware of Hux as an actual person, a real human being, rather than a collection of irritating mannerisms in a sweater-vest: for some reason he seems more solid than before.

It was weird to be ordered around by someone shorter than you, but Hux had apparently been studying with a master, because that I will be obeyed tone just kind of reached past your brain and grabbed you by the spine.
