This was inspired by the domesticity prompts. I couldn’t resist. Meeting the inlaws. Featuring Colin, Cerise, Jaal, and Sahuna.
“You couldn’t find something better to wear?” Colin fussed at his sister as she walked into his quarters on the Tempest. She wore her usual tank top and leggings with her hair its tousled mess.
“What? I don’t exactly have any other clothes besides these. Tann didn’t let us stick around to gather our clothes from the Nexus before we all got kicked off you know.” Cerise reminded him as she turned to face him. “Now why are you so worried tonight?”
“It’s the first time you’re meeting Jaal’s true mother. I just want things to go well.” Colin wrung his hands together as he paced the quarters. Cerise blew out an irritated breath. He’d always been a worrier, it was just how he was.
“Look. I promise to be on my best behavior. I love you Colin. I won’t do anything to mess up your relationship with Jaal.” Colin looked up at her with that look in his eye. “Don’t.” She paused as he gathered her up in a big bear hug. “Hug me.” She sighed as he lifted her off her feet, so she couldn’t struggle. The way it had been their entire lives. “Put me down!” She groused as he set her on the floor as the doors opened.
“Pathfinder. Jaal and his mother have boarded the Tempest.” SAM’s voice drifted over to the twins and Cerise felt her brother stiffen.
“Come on Colin. Put me down so we can give the presentation of normal siblings.” Cerise tilted her head back to look at him and he let go. She dropped with a shriek and a curse. “You’re a jackass!” She scrambled up and dusted herself off as Sahuna and Jaal walked through the door. Colin froze up as he saw them. It was the first time the two families were meeting each other. At least it was Cerise’s first time meeting Sahuna.
“Darling one.” Jaal smiled broadly as he walked over to embrace Colin. The Pathfinder’s face flamed bright tomato red at the endearment. It was still taking some getting used to, the showing of affection. The tender warmth spread through him as he felt those arms come around him. Colin smiled and returned the hug. Sahuna turned to see the young woman next to Colin and her son.
She had certainly expected his twin to be taller. Though the resemblance was strong with the two. “You must be Colin’s sister.” Sahuna approached the other woman with her hand outstretched. She was pleasantly surprised when Cerise returned with the angaran greeting instead of the human handshake. “You’ve experience with our culture?”
“A bit.” Cerise smiled at Sahuna warmly. She meant what she said when she told Colin she was not going to ruin this for him. “I have dealings with the Resistance.”
“Ah! You’re with the mercenary company out of Kadara. Of course!” Sahuna cried out in surprise. Cerise stiffened just a bit in surprise. This usually went one of two ways: good or bad. “I have respect for your company.” Sahuna smiled at her and Cerise relaxed.
“I have nothing but respect for the Resistance and its soldiers.” Cerise saw Sahuna’s eyes sparkle in pleasure at the answer. She also noted the cunning gleam in Sahuna’s blue eyes.
“So, since your brother is reticent in giving me the information I desire. Perhaps you’d be more forthcoming?” Colin stiffened as Jaal brushed a kiss against his cheek.
“Your mother is trying to interrogate my sister.” The laugh rumbled up in Jaal’s chest. His mother was persistent but he had no doubt Cerise could handle herself.
“Is this so bad?” He felt Colin try to move towards his sister and tightened his hold on Colin’s waist. “Yes! Cerise will tell her everything!”
“Why would your sister do that?” Jaal looked puzzled. He couldn’t imagine the anxiety in Colin’s eyes had to do with genetics. “Because I hugged her.”
“Wait. You hugged your sister? So now she’ll tell my mother things you don’t want to tell her?”
“Yes.” Colin gave his sister a look, but she only flashed him an impish grin as she and Sahuna spoke in length. “I don’t like that look. Is dinner ready yet?” Jaal threw back his head and laughed, which drew the attention of the women.
“Rest easy my love. I don’t think your sister would tell any embarrassing stories.” Jaal laughed as he stroked Colin’s hair.
“Don’t count on it!” Cerise answered breezily with a wave. Sahuna chuckled and looked over at Jaal.
“I’m also informing her of your childhood as well Jaal.” Their heads bent together to conspire once more.
“I cannot believe my mother would betray me in such a way.” Jaal grumbled as Colin laughed. Cerise did tell Sahuna about human biology and answered as many questions as she could. Though she refused to divulge too many embarrassing childhood stories. She spoke about Ellen and how Colin was closer to their mother. Sahuna appreciated the honesty in speaking of their childhood.
“How is he about cooking?” The conversation drifted over to Colin and Jaal who both stiffened in response.
“Colin? Oh, please don’t let him near a kitchen…” Cerise declared with her arms crossed in front of her with an X.
“It was one time! One time!” Colin reminded her from his spot on the couch. Cerise whipped her head around to give him a mock glare. “Mom banned you from the kitchen. She and Dad had to remodel the kitchen after that!” Colin crossed his arms and turned his back on her while she flashed a quick grin at Sahuna. Who covered her mouth as a chuckle rose from within her.
Colin grumbled about this being a bad idea but the evening wasn’t so bad. Cerise did manage to be on her best behavior and Sahuna enjoyed meeting Colin’s family.
