Blue throat comorant by moonjazz Via Flickr: These California comorants have brilliant blue eyes to match their throat feathers in mating season. They turn black after the chicks are born. You find them living on coastal cliffs and not in the ocean. They can dive 40 meters deep and grab fish in the beak to eat later. When mating their necks turn blue and then the males build the nest with seaweed and both male and females take turns feeding and protecting after the chicks are born. They do a little dance with their long necks before getting down to procreation, maybe that is where the expression necking comes from. The latin for these birds means marine crow. Also called Brandt's comorants.
