thank u dear! I’ve actually always thought this was really cute; I think I had a childhood friends au planned out a REALLY long time ago but I don’t remember anything ToT
they both go to Rustboro Academy for Trainers (located in, obviously, Rustboro City) where they’re placed in the same class and sat next to each other with assigned seating.
they immediately dislike each other; Shelly is very particular about everything and very organized, while Tabitha as a kid is pretty gross! however on the playground, they’re complete opposites. Shelly likes to get rough and fights a lot with the boys (and threatens the catty girls), where Tabitha stays out of everything and watches her fighing from a distance.
one day she gets into a particularly nasty fight (around late teens, probably relating to early Magma/Aqua rivalry), and Tabitha feels bad because it was some of his friends who had picked on her. he shoos them away and brings her to his house to patch her up, much to her dismay. they still probably really hate each other’s guts at this point.
she starts to soften up after he takes care of her, but is still pretty standoffish. meanwhile, at that age, he thinks the fighting is pretty stupid, and while he still teases her, he’s softened up as well. he doesn’t want to see her physically harmed, at least.
the next day in school, she passes him in the hallway, and gives a polite nod instead of rudely elbowing him like she usually does.
