Let's have a real conversation before we commit for life
So the dialogue goes like this:
D: Tell me!
M: If I do, there’s no turning back. You have to understand what that means.
D: Ysabeau made me understand. Tell me.
M: From this moment, we will always be one. Diana, I love you.
You may call me a romance killer all you want, or a cynic, or whatever. But this is NOT how this conversation should have gone.
Matthew should have declared his love first, BEFORE the act of commitment, and revealed to Diana the ramifications. What IS vampire mating? What about the craving, the sex, and consummation and the scent that comes with it? (She had to travel 400 years back to find out thanks to Philippe! No one told her. Not Ysabeau, who apparently 'made her understand', not Martha. And ESPECIALLY not Matthew!)
What about the blood rage? What about the children--do we want them, if so, what are our options, sired, witches, adopted...? What about the money? Where do we live? What about our respective academic careers? How about meeting the other parents? Why is it only important for Diana to be accepted by Ysabeau, what about Sarah and Em? How is mating different from marriage?
How do we deal with the Congregation and the Covenant issue? And other vampires, and other witches...
Oh, and also, what is wrong with saying, let's give it some time and see where it takes us? We can love each other and still decide a year later that this is not a good idea for life.
Honestly, this scene makes me sad. I know it's fiction, I know they are not human so their customs are different. But this series romanticizes a rushed union. (Seriously, taking a lifelong commitment in the driveway, couldn't they find a nicer place in that fancy chateau?) I know she is horny and he craves her, but you know... discernment... mating for life should not look like this...
