Queer spaces must be intersectional or they will be BULLSHIT. This means letting all queer people in at different axis of privileges and oppression.
The binary, white, straight trans woman deserves a space in queer spaces.
The mixed race cis bisexual man deserves a space in queer spaces.
The white nonbinary person who only passes as their AGAB deserves a space in queer spaces.
The black cisgender gay man being deserves a space in queer spaces.
The binary gay Asian trans man deserves a space in queer spaces.
The white cis bisexual woman who deals with a chronic illness deserves a space in queer spaces.
The mixed race nonbinary person who is aro and romance repulsed deserves a space in queer spaces.
The white-passing heteroromantic asexual Latina deserves a space in queer spaces.
The aromantic heterosexual nonbinary person of unclear race deserves a space in queer spaces.
The disabled, white cis gay man deserves a space in queer spaces.
The cis, straight intersex disabled person of native heritage deserves a space in queer spaces.
The pansexual cis man with dark skin from a minority religion deserves a space in queer spaces.
Most of us exist and intersections of privilege and oppression both. When we throw the exclude people of privileged (or supposedly privileged) identities and ignore their intersecting queer and oppressed identities, we can make our spaces worse and less inclusive.
Cis queer men belong in queer spaces. When we exclude them we exclude many nonwhite and disabled queer people.
Cis white queer women belong in queer spaces. When we exclude them we exclude many disabled and impoverished women.
White transgender people belong in queer spaces. When we exclude them we exclude many disabled, female, nonbinary, and poor transgender people.
Cis gay people belong in queer spaces. When we exclude them we exclude many nonwhite, disabled, and female queer people.
Yes, people with privileged identities need to work on and be aware of their privilege. That’s most people in queer spaces in one way or another. But if we focus on certain privileged identities while ignoring possible oppressed intersections, we make our spaces more exclusive and oppressive generally.
No one with an oppressed identity deserves to face oppression for it in queer spaces. Period. It does NOT matter if they also have an intersecting privileged identity.
Stop putting some privileged identity like “cis”, “white”, “male”, whatever in front of your oppressive bigotry and queer exclusion to act like it’s okay. Our transphobia/queerphobia/sexism/racism/ableism/etc makes queer spaces worse.
