“ sounds like you’re speaking from experience, there. ”
truth be told, she’d had no real idea what she’d been signing up for, when she’d followed the doctor into her baffling, brilliant blue phone box. all she’d had was the promise of adventure, the call to something... bigger. something more. of course, yaz had known it was going to be dangerous, the doctor had warned them all of that much, but she hadn’t expected... well. giant spiders and kerblam! men and sentient universes.
there’s no regret, she finds, when she thinks about her travels through time and space, the memories still bursting bright, breathtaking, behind her eyelids, sending a phantom thrill of adrenaline surging through her. the sensation makes her fingertips tingle.
does sam regret any of it, she has to wonder, though yaz finds herself biting the question back, even as it sits on the tip of her tongue. she’s not one for blundering through social situations like an out of control rhinoceros, like certain mates of hers. yaz tugs at her sleeve, rubbing a loose thread between her fingers. never has been good at keeping her hands still, when she finds nerves bubbling up in her stomach. feels like she’s a champagne bottle somebody’s shaken a little too vigorously.
“ thought I’d be frightened, ” she admits, gaze flickering between the other woman’s face and her shoes, before she steels herself and meets sam’s eyes, “ but m’not. think I’m more scared about the day she leaves us behind. almost don’t know what I’d do without her, now. ”
