Marrying Robert was the best decision you ever made. He was the nicest, funniest, and most attentive guy you’ve ever dated. Despite this, you were a little shocked when Robert proposed to you during your sixth anniversary at the park right before sunset. It was so surreal watching Robert get down on one knee and hold up a small box, inside which was his mom’s wedding ring.
“I’ll save up for a new one, one that’s only yours,” Robert said, uncharacteristically nervous, as if he thought you would say no. And although he would never admit it, he definitely cried when you said yes.
The actual wedding was pretty simple, just a courthouse wedding and lunch at your favorite restaurant after. Once again, Robert promised to save up for the wedding of your dreams. You thought with a smile as you stared longingly at the framed picture of you and Robert’s wedding until you heard the door open.
“Hi, honey, I’m home!” Robert said in an over-the-top 1950’s accent while carrying Beef. The second Beef saw you, he immediately jumped out of Robert’s arms and ran to lick all over your face, no matter how much you tried to cover your face to stop the attack.
While you were distracted by Beef, Robert made his way over to you to kiss you on the cheek. “What were you doing?” He asked as he lay directly on top of you, treating you as his own personal pillow. You shake your head, “Nothing, just looking at our wedding pictures, look how handsome you were.”
Robert glanced at the picture before looking back at you, “You looked incredible that day, but then again, you look incredible every day.”
You roll your eyes jokingly, “You’re such a flatter.” He shrugged before moving closer to you, which was pretty much impossible, but he still tried.
“I could show you how incredible I think you look,” Robert said as he started to kiss your neck softly, looking at you in between each kiss.
The memories of what happened after that came rushing to your head as you stared at the pregnancy test: positive. In your heart, you should’ve known this was a possibility; it explained so much: the morning sickness, the sudden tiredness all the time, and your recently missed period.
What am I supposed to tell Robert?? Filled your mind, you knew Robert always toyed with the idea of having kids, but he always spoke of it as if it were years away. You cover up the used pregnancy test with a tissue and try to calm down, for all you know, it could be a false positive. So you did the rational thing and took two more tests.
You almost bite off your fingernails as you stared at all three positive pregnancy tests. Now you couldn’t deny it anymore; you’re pregnant. A mix of emotions swarmed your brain; it’s not like you didn’t want kids, but the thought of actually raising children terrified you. You look at your phone; it’s currently eight pm, meaning you wouldn’t see Robert for at least another hour. More negative emotions washed over you. You and Robert both had jobs, but California was already expensive with just the two of you; who knows how expensive it’ll be for a family or three, maybe more.
After thinking about the negative for a long time, you take a deep breath to pull yourself together. It's not like you would be completely alone during this; you had a support system to rely on: your family and Robert. Taking another deep breath, you leave the bathroom to think of a way to tell Robert the news.
Apparently, you managed to spend an entire hour in the bathroom because when you walked out, you saw Robert in the kitchen cooking dinner.
Robert noticed you immediately, his face a mix of love and concern, “You ok? You’ve been in there a pretty long time.”
“I have something to tell you.”
“Ok? What is it?” His tone was full of confusion. His confusion only grew when you took a deep breath before saying, “I’m pregnant.” It was like time stopped the moment the words left your mouth. You couldn’t even look Robert in the eye when telling him the news, too scared about how he’d react. Unexpectedly, he walked over and hugged you tightly.
“I’m so happy.”
“Really? I was worried you wouldn’t want kids right now.”
“Well, I didn’t expect it to happen so soon, but it’s with you,” Robert said before kissing you softly. “How are you feeling? About the news, I mean.”
“At first, I was worried about your reaction, but now I feel better knowing we’re in this together.” You say with a small smile. Instead of speaking, Robert kisses all over your face.
“We’re always in this together, we’re a team.”
The nine months of your pregnancy were a blur, and before you knew it, you had two beautiful twins: Cassandra first, and then 15 minutes later, Chase. Neither you nor Robert knew the babies’ gender, wanting it to be a surprise, so, in a roundabout way, you were both right. The twins were a perfect mix of you and Robert, something you both absolutely loved. Now, the twins were about seven months old. With very different personalities, Cassandra and Chase were very different babies: Chase was the definition of a velcro baby, and it only got worse as he grew. At the same time, Cassandra fussed and whined the second someone picked her up.
The sounds of baby coos brought you back to the present. You looked down and almost laughed at Cassandra’s pout when you refused to let her go.
“Don’t you wanna spend time with Mama?” You say before setting her next to Chase to get them dressed. “Ok, now which one?” You hold up the options for the day: overalls with a cute little teddy bear on them or a complete strawberry outfit. Chase babbled and tried to grab at the strawberry outfit while Cassandra went for the overalls. After you get them dressed, you put them in the double stroller and pack a diaper bag for a visit to Robert at work. Finally, you grabbed the picnic basket full of sandwiches, pasta, and small treats before leaving your apartment. His lunch break will be soon, then we can eat lunch. You thought as you began walking to the apartment building’s elevator.
As you parked your car in Robert’s spot, you cooed to your children in the backseats to see if they were excited to see their dad. You take out the stroller from the trunk and make your way to Robert’s floor. You carried the basket, making sure no food would drop out. His team knew you were pregnant, but they all thought it was an elaborate joke. Finally, you made it to Robert’s cubicle. He was in the middle of dispatching, or at least you assumed dispatching because it seemed like a tangent. “Why would I lie about having kids?” Robert asked. You couldn’t hear the response, but you knew it irritated him since he took a deep breath before replying, “Anyway, my wife and kids are going to be here soon, so behave for my replacement.” Robert took off his headphones and began to massage his temples.
“Sounds amazing,” you joke, trying to stop your laughter when Robert jumps at the sound of your voice.
“You’re here early.” Like magic, a smile appeared on Robert’s face when he turned his chair and saw you. His smile only grew when he saw the twins. He stood up and kissed you on the cheek. “What do you want for lunch?”
“Actually, I packed a basket so that we could have a family picnic!” You say cheerfully before the sound of fake gagging grabs your attention. You turned to find the source only to see Chase, the old one.
“It’s too early for y’all to be acting as lovely dovely as y’all are,” Chase grumbled to himself–but still loud enough for Robert and you to hear–before turning his attention to the babies in the stroller. “Hii mini Chase and Cassie,” He immediately started to baby-talk his nephew and niece. “I’ll watch the kids while you’re gone.”
Robert chuckled, “You already took Beef away from me, now it's my kids?” Chase shook his head, his attention still towards his niblets. “Your dad’s just mad people don’t like his ‘more boring than watching paint dry’ personality.” To add further insult to injury, both Chase and Cassie started to giggle madly. “See, even your kids agree.” Chase said proudly while Robert rolled his eyes playfully, “Well, my wife planned a family picnic, so I think the kids are needed.” Chase grumbled again before heading back to his desk.
You and Robert walked to a nearby park, with him pushing the stroller while you carried the basket. When you found a perfect spot, you took out the picnic blanket and laid it on the ground. Robert then placed the twins on the blanket with building blocks and maracas. Immediately, Cassandra began shaking the maracas while Chase began playing with the blocks.
“Have they eaten yet?” Robert asked while he sat around the twins with his legs wide, effectively caging them in. “Yes, but I packed extra bottles just in case.” You respond, sitting across from Robert, to further cage the twins. The picnic was very relaxing. With you and Robert enjoying each other’s company, you listening to him rant about the stupid shit the Z-team did, and both of you watching with pure love in your eyes when the twins do something cute.
"Have I ever told you, you're an amazing cook?" Robert said between bites of your "marry me chicken" pasta. You giggled before joking back, "Well, it's not called 'marry me chicken' for no reason." To your surprise, Robert leaned over to kiss you, "Maybe I'll marry you again then." He leans in for another kiss, but you put your ring finger on his chest to keep him away. "I don't know if you remember, but kissing led us to this," you say, gesturing to the twins caught up in their own world.
Sadly, you couldn’t stay home with the twins forever and had to return to work. To make matters worse, you’re an HR representative and need to go on a week-long company “vacation.” As the supportive husband he is, Robert has spent the upcoming week trying to cheer you up. “I promise to FaceTime you every night, er, well, afternoon for you.” His words lifted your spirits a little; it was only a week after all.
As you went through your suitcase one more time, just to make sure you had everything you needed, Robert placed both twins inside it. “I don’t know if you know this, but it’s illegal for babies to travel like this.” You tease, while he jeers, “I know, but our babies have something very important to say.” Taking your somewhat judgmental look as a sign to continue, Robert moves Cassandra’s mouth to make it seem like she’s talking, “We’ll miss you so much, Mama!” Then, he does the same to Chase: “Yeah, we’ll miss you thissss much!” He says, stretching Chase’s arms wide. You laugh uncontrollably, “I’ll miss you two, too.” You say, pulling the twins up for kisses.
Robert fake-coughed to draw attention to himself. “Will you miss me too?” With a nod, you kiss him on the cheek, “I’ll miss you second after Beef.” Robert holds a hand over his heart. “Only second?” His voice is full of mock sadness.
It’s been a day since you left, and Robert missed you greatly. He knew he was being overdramatic, but he’d gotten so used to waking up before you and staring at your sleeping face–even when you’re drooling. With a groan, Robert got out of bed, glancing at the baby monitor to see if the twins were awake. Usually, Chase was the first one in the house to be awake, always eager to be full of energy, but both he and Cassandra were blissfully asleep. Since it was still early, Robert took a quick shower, brushed his teeth, and fed himself and Beef. This is pretty peaceful, he thought happily to himself.
The sound of loud crying ruined Robert’s peacefulness. I knew it was too good to last. He quickly made two bottles in case the twins were hungry, then walked to their room and found both babies crying loudly. After giving the twins their bottles, Robert glanced at the time: 6:00 am. Finally, the twins finished feeding, and Robert took turns burping them before placing them back into their cribs.
“Ok, guys, Dad’s gonna get you ready.” Robert knew neither of the twins probably could understand him, but he loved talking to them nonetheless. He bathes them, ending up only slightly less wet than when he bathes Beef, and picks out two matching pairs of overalls. Thankfully, the twins didn’t make much of a fuss this morning, which gives Robert enough time to pack a diaper bag, toys, and a foldable playpen.
When Robert got to his desk in the office, he started setting up the playpen and placed all the toys down. Then, he placed the twins in the playpen so that he could still see them while dispatching.
“You do know daycares exist, right?” Chase jeered from his desk next to Robert, “The last thing I need to hear when listening to a bunch of whining babies is actual whining babies.” Robert rolled his eyes, “I know you don’t mean that, you love your godkids.” Chase grumbled before turning his attention back to his computer.
The beginning of Robert’s shift was pretty uneventful, something he was thankful for since it gave him ample opportunities to check on the twins. In the midst of playing peek-a-boo with the twins, the topic of kids came up.
“So how’s the ‘kids’ Bob Bob?” Flambae teased, his voice so full of condescension it immediately pissed Robert off.
“My kids are great, why?” Robert pretended not to hear the snickers from the rest of the Z-team.
“Ok, I tried to be nice, but since that’s clearly not working. Why the fuck do you keep saying you have kids?”
“Because I do have them? I don’t know why no one believes me.”
“You’re lucky to be married, especially to your wife-” before Flambae could finish, both Malevola and Prism interjected, “Very hot wife.” Flambae groans, clearly annoyed about being interrupted, “Yes, a very hot wife, and you really expect us to believe you married a baddie AND she let you impregnate her?”
“So I know this is gonna be a foreign topic to you, you know, since you’re pushing 40 and still single, but when a couple loves each other very much, they get married and sometimes have kids.” Robert knew it was petty, but hearing the sounds of Z-team ooing made him feel confident.
“Bitch I could get married in a week if I felt like it!” Flambae said, either not hearing Prism’s small “Well..” or didn’t care.
“Whatever helps you sleep at night, bud,” Robert said before quickly muting Flambae’s mic before he could respond. The sound of calls took everyone’s attention away from their little spat.
It was Robert’s work break, so he decided to spend all of his time playing with the twins in the playpen. Technically, he was more of Chase’s personal playground, with him consistently climbing over Robert’s legs.
“Wait, you really do have kids?” Robert took his gaze off the kids, only to see the Z-team looking shocked. “I literally have been telling you guys this since they were born??” Robert thought long and hard, “Also, I’ve sent you guys pictures of them?”
“Well, AI is pretty popular these days,” Sonar said as an excuse, to which Robert groaned. Coupe and Punch-Up took the opportunity to play with the twins. Punch-Up scooped up Chase and pretended to have an arm wrestling contest with him, “Such a strong grip for a little babe.” He comeded before tickling Chase into making him giggle. Meanwhile, Coupe and Cassandra were having a mini-staring contest, as if to size each other up. Eventually, Cassandra looks away because she’s a baby, “Such a firm stare for a baby,” which was basically a compliment in Coupe’s own way.
After Coupe and Punch-Up finished doting on the twins, they were passed around to the majority of the Z-team.
“Are you sure you don’t want to hold at least one?” Robert asked Prism, who was busy scrolling on her phone.
“I don’t do babies, but I promise to be a more involved auntie when they’re around eight.” Prism glanced up from her phone to see Flambae, who somehow managed to carry both twins in his arms, “Just so you know, you’re not getting your kids back.” She must’ve noticed Robert’s confusion, so she continues, “Every time Bae’s around kids, especially babies, he refuses to let them go.” Robert shrugged it off. What’s the worst that can happen?
Turns out the worst that could happen is two grown men arguing over whose turn it is to hold the twins. “Just let me hold one, you greedy fuck!” Chase said as he tried (and failed) to jump enough to reach Flambae. “No bi–” He stops himself before cursing, a rare feat for him, before continuing, “Besides, they like me more than you old man!” Chase scoffed at this, “I know you’re not talking, pushing 50 old ass.” The argument grew increasingly heated to the point that a fight was likely to break out.
“Hey! Gimme back my kids,” Robert said, not letting Flambae give any excuses before taking his kids away. This caused both Flambae and Chase to blame each other for getting the kids taken away.
“Can you believe you both are better behaved than two old men?” Robert whispered to the twins, who giggled as if they understood the joke.
It was in the late afternoon when Robert got a FaceTime call from you, which he answered immediately. “Hi, honey,” He said, his voice becoming sickly sweet. But he couldn’t help it, you were his wife and the mother of his kids. “How is your trip?”
Your smile was so infectious that Robert started to smile as well. “It’s been pretty good, but I’ve been missing you like crazy.” Robert nods along understandingly. He’s also been missing you and made sure to tell you as much. The two of you continued to chat about the week so far, but it was mainly focused on you, since Robert wanted to talk to you more than about himself.
“I know the trip will be over in two days, but it feels like a lifetime,” you rant dramatically. Robert chuckles, “Well, your company needs you since you’re such a good HR representative.” He says in hopes of cheering you up, which works since you're vain with modesty.
“Before I lose track of time, can I see my babies?” The moment those words leave your mouth, Robert walked over to the twins’ room where they were sound asleep. “Aww, they’re so cute.” You whisper so as not to wake them up. Then, Robert pans his phone to Beef, who is sleeping next to the cribs like a chubby little guard dog. He quietly leaves the room and closes the door. The mood in the air went from proud parents to a married couple soon after, something you both blame on the other. “I know it’s been tough for you being away, so I promise to do the tongue thing you like.”
“Really?” You tease, starting to absent-mindedly twirl your hair around your finger. “Mhm,” Robert said, staring deep into your eyes. “Just to be fair, we can try that new position you mentioned, too.” Despite how much he tried to be nonchalant, you knew that he got a rise out of it.
