Uhura’s backstory with her family dying was unnecessary, but at the very least it drives home the point of her finding a new family on the Enterprise, and it could explain how Sybok was able to get to her in Star Trek V by helping her face that pain. I’d prefer if they hadn’t given her that backstory, but at least there’s some good that could be derived from it.
