A promise
(Based lightly off real events in someone’s life, tbh idk why I’m writing this, but, I really wanted to get this off my chest)
Every night she’d text him, and he’d text her back, sometimes anyways. Every moment she saw his reply her face would light up in happiness, and when she’d respond immediately within seconds, he’d let out a soft laugh and continue to converse with her.
Sometimes they would call each other until 2 in the morning, laughing and teasing each other, sometimes they would have conversations with new topics, and some with old. But no matter what, they would both enjoy their time together.
One day she texted him early, around 3 pm. Unfortunately for her, he was busy with family things, so he didn’t have his phone. She knew that there was always a possibility that he was busy, but she couldn’t help but worry. So she’d text him again just in case, and when he didn’t respond, she put her phone down and went on with the rest of her day.
About an hour later he checked his phone to see two texts from her, so knowing she would want a response, he sent her a text of reassurance. Unfortunately she was away from her phone, so she never got the message, until it was time she got ready for bed.
She panicked and immediately texted him when she saw he texted her, fingers tapping her phone so fast she misspelled so many words, but she didn’t care, she wanted to talk to him, so very badly. But, sometimes things don’t go your way, and he never got the message until midnight that night.
So, he texted her. Once the message was sent, he stared at his phone screen in silence. Pleading that she was still awake.. begging almost, he missed hearing her melodic voice in his ears, and he didn’t know when he’d be able to hear it again. So he continued to wait, simply watching to see if she would respond.
As if it were luck, she had just finished up with her shower after she had gone offline from playing an online game they would play together. And she saw her phone light up, her heart beat sped up, she knew there was always a possibility of it not being what she wanted, but she couldn’t help the heavy feeling forming in her chest.
She grabbed her phone and saw what it was, a big smile splashed across her face when she saw it was him, but her smiles slowly vanished when she saw what he was saying...
It read, “hey baby... I’m really sorry but... I hope you can forgive me for not texting you on time.. I know you’re probably asleep, and I understand, you need sleep.. but, if you are awake... I’d love to hear your voice.. it makes me smile, and I miss it... again I’m sorry for this being so late..”
She sighed, and then breathed out a confident breath, and texted him back, but telling him to never blame himself for something like that since it’s out of his control. They texted each other a little bit more, simply enjoying each other’s time, before finally, he called her.
Hearing the sound of her phone ringing made her heart leap, and she answered it immediately. They talked and talked and laughed and teased like they normally would. But then, she said how much she misses him. He was a bit confused at first, but then she said this, “I know.. we’ve never actually been with each other, physically, and I know we won’t be able to, for awhile... but, I feel like I’ve been with you before... and I miss you so much...”
He paused, took everything in, and then spoke to her, saying, “I feel just like that.. I feel like I’ve held you gently in my arms.. held you so close, and whispered wonderful things to you... but, we haven’t ever touched each other have we.? I miss you too baby.. I want to be with you..”
It was quiet for a moment, both just listening to each other breathe, then she said to him “raise your hand in the air babe”
He didn’t understand why, but he did so. She did as well, then she told him, “now extend your pinky.” He did that as well, and then he asked her, “what’s this about?”
She extended her own pinky and then giggled, saying to him “you know what a pinky promise is right?” He laughed, he understood what was happening now.
She cleared her throat before saying, “I want you to promise me something, anything, and I’m going to do the same, ok? I’ll go first... I promise that I’ll be with you for all of eternity... no matter what happens.. ok? Now you go”
He smiled when he heard those sweet words, so he said in return, “I promise the same thing, but I also promise that I will bring us together someday.. and we’ll get married together... and have a family of our own, doesn’t that sound nice baby..?”
She paused and took in everything he just told her. Then, she felt a tear slip out of her eye, she sniffled and then spoke, “that sounds, absolutely wonderful... now, shake the air, with your pinky, and I’ll do the same, to seal our promise”
He grabbed the air with his pinky and then shook, and she did the same. This sealing their promises to each other, binding them to each other. No matter how far apart they were from each other, they would be together someday... when will that day be? Well... I suppose we’ll just have to wait and find out now won’t we
