This pennant came to the lab in a ill-fitting Mylar L-sleeve (that covered the item about ¾ of the way and left the tail dangling sadly) and a folder. It had started to fade and fray along the edges. Because it is such a cool and unique item, we thought it was deserving of a little bit of special treatment.
Always excited to use the mat cutter, we decided to rehouse the pennant in a mat lined with buffered folder stock complete with a cover to protect it from further light exposure and damage. To hold the pennant in the enclosure, I toned and cut strips of hollytex to rest overtop of the item, held in by stainless steel pins.
The mat is three-fold. The bottom layer is a 4-ply mat board covered in buffered folder stock, hinged onto the deep bevel 8-ply floating mat as shown above. Another 4-ply mat board with buffered folder stock for the cover and some labels and it was good to go.
The trickiest part of the whole endeavor was cutting the shape; the pennant is not a perfect triangle, nor are most of the edges straight, so cutting the mat to fit without leaving an excessive amount of room was a welcome challenge. Overall, I’m very happy with the end result!
