I took a late afternoon walk yesterday around my old stomping grounds, the Mill Pond Conservation Area in Burlington. This time I left from my parents’ house on Mill Street and walked in from the Chandler Road/Ellery Lane side. I got there a little after 5:30 and was out right at sunset and covered exactly four miles. Just as I was exiting I made friends with two shy deer. They looked at me and didn’t like what they saw, so they made their way deeper into the woods. I took this place for granted as a kid when it was more our less our playground, but today I think it is one of the best spots in Greater Boston for a quick hike. #burlingtonma #millpond #conservationland #burlyma #hiking #woods (at Mill Pond Reservoir) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEaggYxhGms/?igshid=kljdys1y3scb
My first stop today was at the Saw Mill Brook Conservation Land. It’s not very big (27 acres/11 hectares), but it is a gorgeous place. Saw Mill Brook makes its way through the ruins of two dams (a saw mill dam on the Burlington/Wilmington bounds and an upper dam well within Burlington that presumably held battery water storage for the saw mill a hundred yards downstream). The main lower dam is a granite block dam dating from the early eighteenth century and may have been designed by Loammi Baldwin, native of nearby Woburn and America’s first civil engineer. The brook runs through an actual canyon as it makes its way into Wilmington which is relative unique for this area. #sawmillbrook #burlingtonma #wilmingtonma #conservationland (at Burlington, Massachusetts) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-sv_KcBcyW/?igshid=1pnbm19fq9lkm
Mill Pond Reservoir part 2. I saw pussy willows, walked along the shoreline on the south side, and passed through a white line grove before walking across the main dam above the water treatment plant below. #millpondreservoir #burlingtonma #conservationland (at Mill Pond Reservoir) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-ssMx_Bl93/?igshid=doetnx60awuj
I was feeling a little lonely today, so I decided to go visit someplace familiar for a solo walk. I visited Burlington’s Mill Pond Reservoir and Conservation Area. I grew up nearby and this 200+ acre/80+ hectare (consisting of 140 acres of Town owned conservation land surrounding another 60 or 80 acres of Water Department and Edison land where the high tension wires run) property was my playground, I’d visit a few times per week. I never appreciated as a kid what a gorgeous property it is. It is a real gem. More pics to come. #millpondreservoir #burlingtonma #conservationland (at Mill Pond Reservoir) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-sqyqRB0Fg/?igshid=1ws4k4doy1tx
