Continued thoughts:

Honestly, though, celibacy and marriage are more similar than I had realized. I got thinking about it after I made the meme.

Celibacy is a decision and a promise, before God, not to have romantic relationships or sexual relations, with anybody.

Marriage is a decision and a promise, before God, to have those things, with this one person, and this one person only.

Free love and asexuality don’t fit with that, because they’re just about the feelings and the emotions. You get to love or not love anybody in any way you want! If you feel like you love somebody and wanna have those relations with them, you go with it. If you feel like you don’t ever wanna love anybody in that way, you go with it. And if you ever happen to change your mind, that’s totally cool. It’s all about what you feel in your heart, no matter what state your heart may be in.

See, those things don’t require promises. They don’t require responsibility. Therefore, they don’t carry as much weight. But they are easier.

And that’s why celibacy and healthy marriage are never represented.

More things about “Last of a Long Line”:

- This episode is honestly kind of Christmassy. There's a lot of focus on the last Christmas Hiram spent with Leonard and Eugene, and the silver dollar put in the piggy bank every Christmas (which Eugene almost certainly still has, by the way). I almost wonder if I should add this to my yearly Christmas relisten list...

- I really want to read Lucy's article, honestly. It sounds like a really good one, and an interesting subject of course, with a nice conclusion that pulls the whole theme together. (What? I've read some really good things on how to write interesting essays, Chesterton not least.)

- The scene where they realize that Eugene and Bernard are related is PERFECTION. Eugene is elated (to be related), Bernard is SO INSANELY FRUSTRATED and outright refusing to be related to Eugene Meltsner and being utterly annoyed, and Whit is just absolutely dying laughing, I’ve never heard him laugh so much, and he has ended a LOT of episodes laughing. I was grinning from ear to ear the whole time.

- Chris made me laugh with this: “And I have a feeling that his adventure with his newfound cousin Bernard is just beginning.” Oh, lady, you have no idea.

- Seriously, this just keeps reminding me why Bernard and Eugene are the BROTP for me. They are in the number one spot on the list, and they are NEVER COMING DOWN.

Come to think of it, what they wanted to do with Reginald Duffield, they later did do with Jack Allen, and later with Wilson Knox. And with Edwin, a little bit. They brought in an old friend of Whit’s, who could spark a lot of stories about the past, and who mostly became Christians thanks to Whit’s influence. And they brought in a proper Shakespeare enthusiast who could put the young people of Odyssey into unique theatrical situations.

Of course, there are a few differences. Reggie here, he’s a lot more sarcastic, sharper-tongued perhaps, than either Jack or Wilson. But he’s still got a good sense of humour, and something of the prankster in him, as I said in the last post. Jack could have a little bit of mischievousness in him from time to time (see “The Merchant of Odyssey”), but it wasn’t that often.

Reggie has another thing in common with Wilson—they both became a pastor at some point after they met Whit. Oh yeah, and he also has a bit in common with Edwin, since they’re both Shakespeare enthusiasts.

Well, now I gotta think of what it would be like for him to meet all these folks.

The Most Dangerous Game - cont. thoughts.

So one of the primary issues that the General has that prompts the basis for this story is that hunting has become too easy for him and isn’t fun anymore. His response is to hunt a different type of game, but the entire time I was reading through his explanation, I couldn’t help but to wonder why he wouldn’t just try to make the hunt more difficult for himself by crippling himself in different ways.

Can you imagine, the protag. realizes that he can’t escape the island without besting the General, but he could goad the General into making it a more fair fight. No guns, maybe a bow and arrow, only a sword or a knife. Could you imagine the protag trying to ambush and attack the General only to discover (to his horror) that the General is still a force to be reckoned with without a gun. He has to retreat once more and go hide, come up with a new plan, find a way to escape this nightmare.

And then to build upon that, we get more and more clues as we approach the end as to the protagonist’s state of mind as we lead up to the twist.
