The past couple weeks in Star City hadn’t been incredibly eventful for Cable aside from running into his father and several other mutants he had known for most of his life. For a city that was in continuous turmoil and where those with bad intentions roamed free, it was actually quiet on most nights. He’d stopped a couple muggings, but nothing of significance.
It was strange. During war he always hoped and dreamed of peace. Now that he wasn’t in the middle of an active war zone, he almost felt—bored.
Of course, if it was past midnight, a good place to look for someone getting into trouble was the waterfront. He wasn’t looking for a huge brawl; maybe just to catch someone doing what they shouldn’t be. He didn’t bother to cloak himself with his astral projections—sometimes just seeing a big guy with a metal arm and glowing bionic eye was enough to scare some people straight.
Sometimes it was an invitation to a fight.
He’d been keeping tabs on two men making their way on and off of a small boat, possibly moving drugs or weapons. They’d been there the other night, too, doing the same type of thing. He was about to confront them when both were struck, one after the other, dropping them where they stood.
Cable’s head whipped around, searching the buildings where the shots likely came from, bionic eye glowing brightly. He saw movement in the shadows and his eyes narrowed, breaking into a sprint towards the building and using the metal fire escape to close the distance between him and the shooter.
The men had been bad people, there was little doubt about that in Cable’s mind, but this person didn’t have a right to execute them in cold blood. He didn’t know if he was more pissed off that he had wasted his time or that he didn’t get to scare them straight.
“Don’t you move, motherfucker.” He growled out as he found the killer still perched on the rooftop. “Who the fuck do you think you are?”
