đżđđđđđđ: Multiple! Apes x H! Reader
đđđđđđđ˘: *Book meets Movies meets Comics... AKA My version of PotA* After you joined a mission into the dephts of space your ship lands on a planet eerily similar to planet Earth. Your crew is captured during a hunt by the inhabitants of this planet, were evolution seems to have gone upside down as Apes rule the world. You all are brought into Ape City, where your unusual intelligence quickly draws attention. Zira becomes fascinated by you in particular, observing your self-awareness, calm reasoning, and attempts to communicate. As Zira studies you, she begins to suspect that you possess an intelligence far beyond any human beast on the planet. When Dr. Zaius visits the laboratory, he is informed about both yours and MĂŠrous' impressive cognition. However, his focus narrows on you after he learns you had been wearing a braided headband marked with a star symbolâan emblem identical to the one representing ape society and even worn by Zaius himself. This discovery unsettles him deeply. Where Zira sees hope and scientific breakthrough, Zaius sees danger and an omen.

âOther animals at the top of the pyramid, such as lions and sharks, evolved into that position very gradually, over millions of years. This enabled the ecosystem to develop checks and balances that prevent lions and sharks from wreaking too much havoc. As lions became deadlier, so gazelles evolved to run faster, hyenas to cooperate better, and rhinoceroses to be more bad-tempered. In contrast, humankind ascended to the top so quickly that the ecosystem was not given time to adjust. Moreover, humans themselves failed to adjust. Most top predators of the planet are majestic creatures. Millions of years of dominion have filled them with self-confidence. Sapiens by contrast is more like a banana republic dictator. Having so recently been one of the underdogs of the savannah, we are full of fears and anxieties over our position, which makes us doubly cruel and dangerous. Many historical calamities, from deadly wars to ecological catastrophes, have resulted from this over-hasty jump.â
â Yuval Noah Harari, âSapiens: A Brief History of Humankindâ
When you accepted the offer to join an incredibly ambitious expedition sponsored by the European Union into the uncharted reaches of space, specifically to the Betelgeuse star system, you moved out of jaded fear and hopelessness. The world nowadays seemed to be ending, cataclysm after cataclysm, extreme weather due to climate change, uprisings, scandals, corruption, crime, war⌠Each day your heart seemed more empty, your work no longer was your solace, your hope escaping from your pores each time you looked at social media feeling the cold thick feeling of foreboding death hugging you like a pool of molasses. The deep set depression had shadowed you since you were young, uprooted from everything you knew by a french expedition to San Franciscoâs Muir woods. They claimed that they were saving you, bringing you back to your own species, as the hope of recovering the USA from the ape uprising from 2011 had been failure after failure, but to your young mind you had been kidnapped from your family, taken from everything you had ever known, from your home and taken to an unknown land with unknown people, a foreign language and most of all, where everyone spoke for you.
In the quietness of the night in Paris where the sky appeared marred by light pollution and no star shone bright enough, you could still hear Mauriceâs pained hoots as you were dragged away, you could still feel Corneliusâ hands pull yours trying unsuccessfully to rip you away from the human soldiers, your tear muddled eyes painfully looking around the commotion of apes fighting humans for the ape that had been all you had known, throat raw from calling for him, for the king of the Muir woods who was no more.
âDADâ!â
Finally you had been taken to a ship where you spend a month, refusing to eat or speak to your âsavioursâ, clutching close to your chest the last gift Caesar had given you before his passing, a beautifully hand woven headband, with shells you two would collect sometimes on the expeditions he approved you could come along as well as small beads, but most importantly, in the center there was an animal bone hand carved into the all familiar symbol that meant home. It was your last memory of your family and it meant the world to you.
Once you landed on the foreign land you were taken to an orphanage in Paris, where you tried your best to assimilate back with other humans, barely speaking and acting - as they usually said- âanimal-likeâ. You managed to make a few friends in that dreadful place, a girl your age named Neus being your closest confidante. She was the opposite of you, where you were introverted she was a social butterfly, where you were guarded she wore her heart in her sleeve, which meant that you two made quite the unstoppable duo. With patience and love Neus was able to coax you out of your guarded shell as you two went on adventures around the city. In one of those many adventures is where you met him.
The fires of chaos had been fuelled by the radical extremist terrorist group that called themselves the Exercitus Viri â The army of man â and Paris had not been spared, these extremist believed they had the holy mission of being the saviours of the human race and so they raided zoos, ransacked circuses waging a misguided war against apes. Unbeknownst to them, in doing so they had created an enemy unlike any other in written history:Â Pug, âle gorille le plus intelligent du mondeâ- a travelling circus gorilla known for his high intelligence, he had rebeled and raised an army of apes and in his attacks against the Exercitus Viri across the old continent, he showed an amazing tactical prowess. Though papers and news alike chalked all of this to an urban legend, you knew better.
Neus and you both shared your dislike for the hate and discrimination apes suffered around the world â she was the only one who truly believed your stories of your family of apes back in San Francisco, of their kindness and their want for a peaceful cohabitation â. So when she heard of an attack the Exercitus Viri had planned against a research center at the outskirts of Paris, you had snuck into the back of a truck going in the same direction with the mission of freeing those poor apes before the men arrived. It had been hard sneaking inside but even harder was the psychological blow that was seeing these poor apes jailed in cages much too small and bare to be comfortable. Soon your plan began, while you tried to communicate with the apes, Neus snuck into the head researcherâs office, stealing the keys of the cages. After the three years the two of you had known each other she was amazed at how well you communicated with apes, how they seemed to calm in your presence, their gaze a little less guarded.
âYou should become a primatologist!â She kept insisting. A young chimp nodded in agreement and you couldnât help the snort of laughter at your friend's bright eyed gaze.
Once all the primates had been freed, you two lead them silently in the labyrinthic corridors of the facility when, as you doubled a corner the cold barrel of a riffle rested on your forehead.
âLook what we have here⌠Lead them back to us? Aww, thanks for making this easier kiddos.â One of the men jeered, you felt your friend shift closer to you, her hand holding yours as you felt sweat form on your forehead. Testing your luck you shifted your gaze back towards the apes, meeting their untrusting â almost betrayed expression and you felt your stomach drop. Thinking on your feet your hands slowly reached into your pocket, hand grazing the small switchblade you carried for protection. Feeling a tug on your hand, your eyes meet Neusâ and she smiled, slowly pulling something out of her pocket.
âRUN!!â She screamed as she threw the homemade smoke bomb. As the visibility clouded, you pulled her away, running back to the corner you had turned with the apes behind you, hooting in agitation and nerves. Quickly you heard the yells of the men as the smoke cleared and their boots thundering against the floorboards following behind you. With your heart beating painfully against your trachea you kept running, searching for another exit. You could make out the emergency exit when a painful explosion shot through your thigh, making you fall to the floor. Between Neusâ screeches of your name and the apes concerned hoots you tried to sit up on the floor, looking at your pants slowly darken with blood.
â The emergency exit is just at the end of the corridorâ please! just leave!â You panted, as a female chimp approached you, helping you cover your wound with her bigger hands. âPlease leave!! Theyâll kill you! please!â You begged the apes, some had uncertainty in their eyes, gazing back between the exit and you, others like the chimp helping you were more concerned with you.
âThey⌠will kill you too if you stay behindâ A deep rough voice muttered from the dark, and as you looked up at the shadows you could make out big green eyes, the familiarity in them made your chest tighten in deep-rooted grief.
âD-Dad? â You mumbled under your breath as the ape with green eyes looked at you curiously, you could make out other pairs of eyes as chimps, bonobos, gorillas and orangutans came out the shadows. The green eyed gorilla in front of you snorted as he signaled for the orangutan next to him, who wore a white cloth around his shoulders. That same ape dutifully ripped a long string of his cape and handed it back to the gorilla in front of you.
âI⌠donât think I look⌠much like your fatherâ The gorilla hummed with slight amusement as his big hands wrapped the cloth around your wound, applying gentle force.
âYouâd be surprisedâ You smiled back at him, wincing slightly at the pressure. Soon you could feel Neusâ arms from behind you, wrapping around you as her wet cheeks burrowed on your shirt. The gorilla snorted as he checked the bleeding had been stopped, then stood to his full height and started signaling his soldiers.
âYou⌠were foolishly brave, little oneâ He murmured. âBut it is time you both leave. ThingsâŚwill get very ugly.â He looked down at you with gentle green eyes.
âWhat is your name?â You asked, breathlessly as Neus and the female chimp who had helped you before helped you up.
â...â The gorilla looked at your eyes for a few seconds that felt like he was analyzing your whole soul. â My name⌠is Pug.â He responded, lips quivering in a small smile as you practically beamed at him. âNow itâs time you all get out of here.â He ordered as the yells of the Exercitus Viri became louder.
You donât remember much after that, perhaps you passed out of blood loss or simply the adrenaline was too much for your body. All you could make out were big warm hands helping you out, soft hair tickling your cheek as you were carried, shouts, grunts and gunshots but you awoke the next morning on a bed in a hospital with Neus holding your hand and sleeping face-first of the bed you laid on, a few nurses, two policemen and an old man standing in your room.
The police informed you that you were carried by Pug the gorilla to the hospital doors with a gunshot on your thigh, that it almost got your femoral artery and that you were very lucky to be alive. They also informed you that the old man in the room was the head researcher of the lab you had broken into and that he would not press charges if you answered some questions.Â
In the end, when you were discharged from the hospital, you met with the resercherâ who introduced himself as Dr. Antelle, an excellency in his field, after talking with him he expressed his willingness to cover the costs of your education if you worked for his research team. With such an offer you decided to accept and studied zoology specializing in primatology. In many of your expeditions across the world you had seen how some communities had been able to coexist peacefully with the apeâs civilization, such was the case of Borneo, where children and apes exchanged goods and played together. For a few years you mainly worked with the apes in the International Simian research center in Ghana until you were called back to Paris by Dr. Antelle, to report your findings and he shared his new crazy idea. He was adamant on having you aboard his ambitious expedition to another star system, highlighting how he only wanted to take the most brilliant minds with him, in hopes of finding a new Earth to inhabit. You felt kind of flattered as Professor Antelle in all his brilliantness was but a prideful misanthropist, he had carefully selected the crew for their expertise: Ulysse MĂŠrou, a journalist chosen to document his discoveries, and Arthur Levain, a talented physician, would accompany you two.
You accepted his offer, with the one condition that he let you say bye to Neus and that he funded one last trip for you to San Franciscoâs Muir woods.
A few months later, here you were now, deep into space, ready to travel until you reached Betelgeuse orbit with a deep sense of longing for the family you had left behind. During the journey, you found solace in the company of Hector, the team's chimpanzee companion that unlike all the other apes you had met until now, was not affected by the ALZ-11 virus. Your mission companions regarded Hector as an amusing, almost trivial presence but you saw him as a curious and thoughtful creature, who offered you a familiarity and peace of mind. You often read to him from Professor Antelleâs extensive library â the man had taken his whole book collection with him for this mission!â, your favorite volumes to read ranged from poetry to philosophical texts, to sociology and even a few childrenâs classics. Hector would always watch you with perceptive amber eyes, seeming to absorb the rhythm of your voice and preferring your company to the others. Between reading all the books in Antelle's collection â The trip seemed to drag on more than you thought it would, and youâd rather nurture your mind than listen to MĂŠrou trying to flirt with you again. â To occupy yourself during the long months of travel, you decided to train diligently, preparing for the unknown as you recalled the old movies youâd watch in the orphanage about aliens and predators, you could even hear Neusâ screeches each time the xenomorph appeared on camera. You dedicated your time to learn, you studied survival skills, navigation and learned techniques for identifying potential threats. Though Antelle and the others occasionally mocked your efforts, dismissing them as unnecessary, you remained steadfast, driven by a fear you could not fully articulate.Â
But as you caressed the carved bone in shape of a star in the woven headband sitting snugly against your forehead you remembered who you were, where you came from, and what your father, Caesar had taught you...
Do you have any headcanons for Cornelius Noakes? đ
I donât see a lot on him anywhere :( I need more of my favorite engineer
((Can be platonic, romantic, or sexual. I wanna know all đ))
Honestly, I wasn't expecting Cornelius to be up here in the vast of crazy ex-pops. It's actually refreshing.
Cornelius is such a chill guy. Well, as chill as he can be in a fucked up facility. Cornelius can be a bit difficult to befriend & even more difficult to turn into a romantic partner. Listen, he's seen some shit, & it's all shit he doesn't want to get into.
It doesn't mean he doesn't have a heart; he does absolutely care. The issue is that Cornelius is way too scared to care because there's only a certain amount of time that you will either end up dying, escaping, or being brainwashed. Regardless, he will still be here. Fixing up rigs.
If life were better, he would be more at ease spending time with you. Cornelius doesn't want to spend every waking moment fearing for your safety internally & worried that you may go insane. He wants you to live. He wants you to live & still be you.
In case you guys missed!

MCYT/Dream SMP:-
CC! Ranboo:
- Both of you were playing minecraft with each other while staying a VC talking.
- Ranboo was thinking of how to confess to you but he just didn't know how.
- "Hey Y/N?" He asked as you hummed in response. "I don't know how else to say this to you but I really like you. More than a friend and it's okay if you don't feel the same. I understand."
- No joke but he felt pretty impressed with himself for confessing while they played minecraft but at the same time he felt pretty stupid.
- You were pretty taken aback by the sudden confession considering you didn't expect this.
- You smiled at the screen as you gave his character a small /.hug
- "It's okay Ranboo cause I like you too like that."
C! Ranboo:
- Both you and Ranboo were making flower crowns at a nearby flower field.
- You noticed that Ranboo looked nervous as he made his flower crown and asked him if he was alright.
- "I-I'm alright... It's just that... I don't know how else to say it but I really like you and I don't mean it in a platonic way."
- He felt pretty scared thinking he was going to ruin everything but he was surprised when she saw your hand over his.
- "I like you too Ranboo."
- Ranboo was shocked but he smiled and put the flower crown he made for you which consisted of alliums and oxeye daisies cause he knows you love a lot.
- Though little did you two know that your older twin brother, Tommy and his friend Tubbo were looking spying on you two and Tubbo was refraining Tommy from killing Ranboo.
CC! Foolish:
- You were technically just reading a book in the living room once you heard your doorbell ring as you got up and opened the door to see Foolish.
- What surprised you was that, he had a bouquet of your favorite flowers as he held them out and gave them to you.
- "I really like you. A lot."
- He was pretty nervous considering this took him a lot of confidence to do so.
- You were shocked and a red blush had dusted your cheeks as you smiled and took the flowers from his hand.
- "Thank you for the flowers Foolish and I like you a lot too."
- Not gonna lie but you were happy that he felt the same way as you.
C! Foolish:
- You and Foolish were current at his summer home talking with each other about each other's day.
- Though you would try to hide your blushing cause that would raise questions from him and you didn't want that though you snapped out of you thoughts when he you heard him say something.
- "Y/N? I know we have been friends for a while now but I want to say that I r-really l-like y-you and was wondering if you wanted to be m-my girlfriend? It's alright if you don't feel the same way..."
- You were shocked and technically red in the face cause your crush just confessed to you and you didn't know how to react right now cause it caught you by surprise.
- But eventually you smiled and giggled at his confession.
- "I like you too Foolish and I'd love to be your girlfriend."
- You hugged him as he hugged you back and you were hoping that once your adoptive father, Sam knows about this, doesn't freak out and go all overprotective on you.
The Village That Went Mad:-
Catboy! Corpse:
- You two went on your walk in the forest which you two normally do at the evening.
- Cat stopped at a clearing and confessed his feelings.
- "I-I uh... I like you. A lot actually! More than friends to be honest..."
- It was pretty nerve wracking for him since this was his first time confessing to someone he liked for a while.
- You were shocked and taken aback while blushing a bit.
- You smiled and accepted his feelings by returning it.
- "It's alright Cat. No need to be nervous cause I like you like that too!"
Cornelius:
- Cornelius took you out for a picnic at a very beautiful meadow filled with flowers in the evening.
- You two basically made flower crowns for each other and messed around like kids.
- After that you two laid on the soft grass as you looked at the fireflies as well as hear the sounds of crickets chirping nearby.
- He huffed out and looked at you as he softly blurted out his confession.
- "I love you."
- You looked at him as he realized what he said and started to apologize but you engulfed him in a hug and smiled as you spoke.
- "Took you long enough. It's alright I love you too Cor."
The Lost City Of Mizu:-
Ranbob:
- You two were stargazing while lying down on the field on a hill.
- Ranbob noticed you were feeling a bit cold and slightly shivering so he brought you closer to him to warm you up.
- You blushed at this and slowly wrapped your arms around him to snuggle up to him.
- This caused him to blush as he looked back up at the sky and let out a sigh.
- "Just so you know, I like you a lot. It's alright if you don't feel the same way or return my feelings."
- You smiled at his words as you hugged him.
- "I love you too Ranbob!"
((Author: I literally have a thing for people like Ranbob, don't I? xD Okay no scratch that I have a thing for Endermen-human hybrids or smth LOL))
Charles:
- Charles decided to take you around the town he lived in with his friends.
- You enjoyed meeting the townspeople since everyone was very nice to you.
- Later you two went to a cafe and talked to each other about many things.
- Charles seemed to get lost in thought as he stared at you as you talked, you seemed to notice that he spaced out and was staring at you so you snapped him back to reality and asked him if something was on his mind and he blushed.
- "U-um it' nothing really! I just u-um... I kn-know it feels a bit too quick but I really like you and was hoping if you could be my girlfriend?"
- You were a bit taken aback since you didn't expect him to feel the same way but you smiled and nodded.
- "I really like you too Charles and yes I would love too!"
Isaac:
- You, Isaac and his friends decided to go to the Subbin Empire to watch the gladiator fighting each other to become a general (Based on the Lost city of Mizu characters minus Ranbob being shown in the first part of The Pit episode).
- Isaac was basically planning on confessing his feelings to you before the games started and his three friends already knew what to do to make it happen.
- Benjamin, Charles and Cletus made a very good excuse saying they need to go do something real quick which left you and Isaac to be alone.
- Isaac took the chance to confess to you since he knew it was now or never.
- "Listen y/n! I just want to say that I like- no I love you! More than a friend! I understand if you don't feel the same way..."
- You looked at him and before he could think he just ruined a friendship you spoke up.
- "It's alright Isaac I love you too so don't worry and yes I will be your girlfriend if that's what you were going to ask me."
I had a thought.... WHAT IF.... W-what if Yandere! Apes?!! What if, Yan! Cornelius, who is a gentleman but at the same time is pretty posesive but also devotional of his darling??? What about Yan!Zaius who is so obsessed with you and tries to psychologically control you?? Who is SO SO JEALOUS of everybody else looking at you??? Aand Zira! Bright, intelligent Yan!Zira who is obsessively fixated on you since the first time she sees you, who is soo caring and wants you to only rely on her...
AAANd what about Yan!Caesar? Who is a mighty protective war-god and is soooo tired of losing his loved ones... Who tries to keep you hidden in the colony, guards posed at the door and only he or his sons are allowed in... Yan!Koba, who loathes humans but loathes his feelings for you even more... How could he trauma-bond with a human?! Disgusting! But he would not hesitate to destroy everything that stands in his way to you...
And poor sweet Yan!Blue eyes, who is desperate emotionally for your affection, whose deep search for love and his fierce protection of you in his insecurity-fueled obssession... and finally Yan!Noa who spirals because your fierce loyalty to him and the eagle clan, who is protective of you and the clan but aches for your validation that he is a good leader. Whose love starts innocently but becomes obsessive the more danger (humans) lurks around the forest, who desdesperatly needs you to choose him....
I have sooo many thoughts about this.... đ¤đ¤đ¤đđđđ feel free to drop your own Headcanons or your ideas! đđ
*David Attenborough voice* The male chimp Cornelius is trying to woo the human Reader with the ancient tippy tap courting ritual dance... Will he be successful?
I was about to go to sleep when a thought suddenly attacked me.
SOo In the PotA book it's described that once the apes placed the humans in pairs, the males began a sort of dance ritual (like some birds do) around the females who in the end had to show approval or reject them.
So I'm thinking, our Apes with Reader whos already recognized by ape society as an equal. They believe that that's a natural human behaviour to woo your mate. So one day, in private the try to woo you dancing.
Zira: Probs the one who does the best (has seen maaany of these) and dedicates to you a whole interpretative dance routine she's been secretly practicing for hours on end. Blushing 100% & probably hides her blush from you when you hug her half from embarrasment, half proud of you liking her show. If she sees you smiling at her , she melts in her movements.
Cornelius: 10000% embarrased, suddenly he doesn't know how feet work. Clumsy in his movements but pours his heart in the moment. Maintaining eye contact even if his face is bright purple from blushing and his eyes are begging to blink. Will twirl around you and shake his arms like the carnotaurus in Prehistoric planet did. Pls hug and kiss him afterwards, he needs to hear that you liked it and you though he was made for panicking at the disco. Probably will hide in your neck for the rest of the evening or until you reasure him how amazing and cool he did.
Zaius: This man is too proud to do such a thing. He? Behaving like a man???! Unthinkable!! He would NOT lower himself to- Wait, wait did you say an human dared to dance around you asking to mate?! HOW DARE THEY!! DONâT THEY KNOW THAT YOU AND HIM- Nevermind, your mindtricks donât work on him!! Though the following days he keep coming to see you... He acted... weird. Strange. Did his arms move more than normal?? You could swear he tried to move them like one would to dance el "AserejĂŠ"... Has he always forego his cane in order to walk around you? Wait- Is he...Is he dancing?! Shaking his lucious hair?! Oh my god that man wants you so bad it's funny- Tho pls accept him, look at his pretty hair!!!!
Also, probably Caesar (who's seen too much Tv with the Rodmans) :

â ăăťăăăťăăâăăťăăăťăâ
Cornelius had always been a careful thinker, a measured speaker, but you unraveled him in a way he couldnât explain. When you had first arrived, he had been fascinated.
You were intelligent in ways no human should have been. You spoke, reasoned, challenged him.
At first, it had been purely intellectualâof course it had.
You made him question things.
And Cornelius loved questions.
But you keep refusing to be categorized. Refused to fit neatly into the laws of nature heâd known all his life.
But the problem wasâ You had become a question he could not answer. He had tried to reduce you to a puzzle, a mystery, something he could fit into the grand tapestry of history.
And slowlyâhorrifyinglyâCornelius realized it wasnât just your mind that fascinated him, but you.
âYour history is wrong,â You had told him, arms crossed. âHumans were here before you.â
âThatâs a bold claim.â Cornelius swallowed, his heart racing at the implication. âItâs simply impossible.â
You glanced up, eyes glinting as you flipped through the pages of one of his books. âYou already suspect it.â
He swallowed hard, eyes downcast. âThat doesnât meanââ
You shut the book with a soft thud. âYou know Iâm right.âÂ
Corneliusâ eyes looked at you for a brief moment, and for the first time, he admitted something he had been fighting for weeks.
âI donât want you to be right,â he said quietly and if it wasnât for the fact he was seated before you, youâd probably wouldnât have heard him.
Your expression softened. âWhy?â
âBecause if you are, then everything Iâve ever believed is a lie.â
You leaned forward, voice softer now. âAnd that scares you?â He hated how you could see right through him. Cornelius was afraid. Because if you were rightâif human civilization had come before the apesâthen his entire belief system was a lie.
He hesitated, the silence engulfing his office. Then, barely above a whisper he answered without meeting your gaze.
âYes.â
Cornelius didnât move. Didnât breathe.
You reached out, fingers softly brushing over his knuckles, his hands tightly intertwined together and with a quiet but sweet voice you asked.
âI scare you too, donât I?â
Because yes. Yes, you did.
But not for the reasons you thought. Not because you were a threat to ape history but because you were a threat to him, as fear wasnât the only thing stirring in him.
Wanting you.
You were brilliant, sweet and the more time he spent beside you, the more he found himself wanting your trust.
He was an ape and you were a human. It was unthinkable and yet, when you leaned forward, eyes full of fire, he thoughtâŚ
It meant that everything he had builtâhis beliefs, his understanding of the worldâwas wrong.
No.
Cornelius wasnât a fool. He knew what this meant.
It meant that he wasnât just a scholar studying history.
He was part of history now, and history always had a cruel way of punishing those who challenged it.
You sat back in the chair, relaxedly watching him with quiet amusement. For such a quiet man, his thoughts were so loud.
âYouâre different from the others,â you mused.
Cornelius cleared his throat as he adjusted the neck of his shirt âH-How so?â
âYou donât just want to control me. You want to understand me.â He could feel your gaze piercing through him, a small but beautiful smirk on your lips that made his heart piston.
Cornelius felt heat rise to his face. âThatâs⌠not entirely true.â
You arched a brow, teasingly. âOh?â
Cornelius hesitated. His heart was pounding hardâas an unfamiliar, dangerous feeling rose inside him, like a damp close to overflowing everything close by. He shouldnât be here. He shouldnât be talking to you like this.
And he definitely shouldnât be wondering what it would feel like if you touched him again.
You tilted your head in curiosity, your eyes never wavering in its inspection as you watched him closely. âYou donât hate me.â
Cornelius exhaled slowly, trying to keep his voice steady. âNo,â he admitted.
You propped yourself from your seat, getting closer to him, reaching over the table between the two of you, voice barely above a whisper.
âThen what do you feel?â
Cornelius hated himself for it.
He shouldn't have felt this way. He was an ape. You were a human. It was unnatural, it was forbidden.
And yetâ
Every time your sharp gaze was on him, every time you smirked, every time you challenged himâ
His heart raced.
It wasnât just admiration anymore. It wasnât just respect.Â
It was need.
And that terrified him more than anything.
Because Cornelius had always been a creature of control and you had taken that from him and as he stood there, looking at you, knowing that one day you might slip through his fingers foreverâ
Cornelius made his choice.
Let the world judge him.
Let history condemn him.
He didnât care anymore.
Because for the first time in his life, Cornelius wasnât afraid of the truth. And the truth wasâ
He loved you.
He remembered a night similar to this one, one where you had leaned in closeâtoo closeâ as you two were going over an ancient map he had recently found. Your shoulder brushed against his, your scent was warm, earthy, alive, yours.
He had always sought knowledge, not feelings. But knowledge was dangerous, because once you knew something, you could never un-know it. He knew now, maybe had always known but refused to accept it, that he wanted you.
Cornelius had frozen and you noticed. Of course you had noticed. You always noticed.
âYouâre tense,â you murmured, glancing up at him, your voice low. Teasing.
Cornelius had swallowed. âYouââ His throat had gone dry. âYouâre very close.â
You had arched an eyebrow, but neither of you moved away.Instead you had lifted a handâslowly, deliberatelyâand traced the corner of the map with your fingertips.
âGo on,â you murmured, looking at him from under your lashes. âTeach me, Cornelius.â
Cornelius had tried.
He really had.
He had tried to focus on the map, on the history, on anything but the way your fingers brushed against his own.
On anything but the way his heart was pounding. On anything but the way, you looked so incredibly sensual as you asked him to teach you.
And for a single, reckless secondâ
He had almost reached for your lips.
And that terrified him.
And he fled.
So he had pushed back from the table, clearing his throat. Found an excuse to leave, and as he walked away, he knew that if you had touched him even a second longerâ if he had stayedâŚHe would have let you do to him as you pleased.
He had felt your warmth, the brush of your fingers against his own, the unbearable closeness.
And every night since then he could only wonder what ifâ
What if he hadnât?
What if he had let his hand linger on yours?
What if, instead of pulling away, he had traced the delicate line of your wrist, up your forearm, memorizing the way your skin felt beneath his fingertips?
Would you have stopped him?
Or would you have leaned inâjust a little, just enough for him to feel your breath against his cheek?
Would he have dared to tip your chin up, to search your gaze, to see the fire in your eyes and finally understand what it meant?
Would he have let himself taste it?
Would it have been a slow, unraveling kind of kissâtentative, full of hesitation, of wonder? Or would it have been clumsy, heated... His mind lost to the way you felt, the way you tasted?
Would you have smiled afterward?
Would you have whispered,â took you long enoughâ ?
And would Corneliusâlogical, cautious, careful Corneliusâ Would he have been able to let you go afterwards?
âSomething wrong, Cornelius?â
He had prided himself on his self-control, but none of that mattered now that you were standing so close. Not when your fingers had brushed against his once again. Not when his dreams were plagued with the images of what ifâs, not when he was still feeling the heat of your touchâ touch that sent shocks through his body, making him tremble with something he could no longer ignoreâ
It was mocking. Playful.
You knew what you were doing to him. And CorneliusâCornelius could not handle it.
Standing before him were you: his human and his mind was a storm of logic warring against the deep ache in his chest.
He was not a reckless fool who would throw himself into the unknown without first calculating the risks. But thisâthis momentâwas beyond reason.
He shouldnât do this.
He should turn back, pretend the feelings were never there, bury them beneath research and propriety.
But the thought of walking awayâof never telling youâwas worse than any rejection he might face.
So he did the most terrifying thing he had ever done in his life, and with a whisper of your name, he spoke.
"IâŚ"
Your eyes found his, expectant, and his courage wavered instantly.
Could he really do this? Risk everything?
He could lose everything.
But you were his.
His intellectual equal. His companion. His obsession.
" I need to tell you something. Iâ" He exhaled sharply, rubbing his hands together to stop them from shaking. " No, thatâs not right. What I mean isâwhat Iâve been trying to say for⌠quite some time now, actually, isâ"Â
As you always did.
He winced at the sound of his own voice, You sound like a babbling fool. But you didnât say anything, you simply⌠listened patiently, waiting for him with a soft smile.
"I know this may seem improper, perhaps unwise, even absurd, but I cannot seem toâno, I mean, I do not wish toâ"
His heart pounded. He felt trapped between the words he wanted to say and the fear of what might happen if he said them.
The possibility of losing you gripped him like a vice.
But thenâyou smiled. Soft, Knowing.
As if you had been waiting, and before he could spiral further, before he could ruin his own confession with endless overthinkingâ
You kissed him.
For the first breath, he didnât even react then something in him cracked.
Your lips were warm, soft, tenderâa sensation so foreign, so utterly impossible, that his mind refused to comprehend it at first.
The weight of his uncertainty, the fear of rejectionâall of it shattered in a million pieces.
A sharp, involuntary tremor ran through him as his hands, that had been frozen, moved on their own. One settled on your waist, hesitant, disbelieving as the other lifted, shaking, to cup your cheek as if you were made of something too delicate, too precious to hold.Â
A soft mumble against your lips, a whisper of your name, his breath uneven.
You pulled back just enough to meet his gaze, and oh, how you looked at him.
Not with pity. Not with confusion. But with love.
"Cornelius," you said, voice soft but firm.
The way you said his nameâhis nameâas if it was something worthy, something cherishedâ
His vision blurred with unshed tears.
"I thought you would never say it," you whispered against his lips.
"Say⌠what?" he rasped, his brain lagged from the sheer intensity of the kiss, his mind still struggling to believe this was real. You laughed softly, tilting your head with sparkling eyes.Â
"That you love me."
Cornelius sucked in a breath.
The words he had feared to say aloud, the words that had tormented him for so longâ
Cornelius' chest tightened painfully, a desperate, overwhelming emotion rising so fast that he could do nothing to stop it. He could only pull you closer this time, over the table and onto his lap as his lips crashed against yoursânot in fear, not in hesitationâ
You knewâŚ
And still, you were here.
But in relief.
In longing.
In the sheer, breathtaking joy of knowing that for once the universe had been kind to him and he could barely breathe.
The moment his lips had left yours, the moment he pulled back, the moment he saw the way you stared at himâ
He had never wanted something like this before.
Never ached.
Never needed.
But when you whispered his name like a secret, when you made him feel like he would die if he didnât touch you again.
From now on, he wouldnât be able to stop himself. His hands shot out, grabbing your waistâtoo fast, too roughâhis breath coming quicker than it should as he pressed you closer to his body. Your lips parted in a quiet moan, your eyes darkening with something he couldnât name⌠Something that made his entire body burn.
He had never done anything like this before.
Never acted without thinking.
Never let himself want.
But right nowâhe wanted so badly.
He whispered your name like a plea, pulling you in another kiss. Messy, desperateânothing like the careful, structured man he had always been. As you melted into him, your hands fisting the fur on the back of his neck, pulling him closer, closer, closer.
The second you lips parted and he could taste you again, the soft, breathless noise you made against his mouthâ
Cornelius was lost.
He gripped you harder, hands trembling, composure shattered as he chased your lips like a man starved. The feel of your body against his, the way you gave in to him.
You were fire.
And he wanted to burn.
When you finally broke apart, he was breathing too hard, vision blurred, his body shaking as you looked up at him with swollen lips, cheeks flushed red and eyes filled with something dangerous.
âTook you long enough,â you whispered heatedly, pulling him back into a sweet kiss. Cornelius could only laugh softly against your lips, gladly kissing you back.
