Spiritfarer - fixing ableist content
While Spiritfarer is 100% one of the best games I’ve ever played, there’s something that did irk me a little during my playthroughs : Gustav’s story. He was a museum curator who ended up severly disabled. But at a few points, Gustav talks about his wheelchair and his disability in...less than ideal ways.
[image description : two speech bubbles from Gustav saying “Machines like the dreaded chair. The one that subsumed me, made of me an object.”]
Well, apparently a bunch of people brought the issue with Thunderlotus. In September 2020, they released an apology regarding the issue, promising to correct it in future updates.
They eventually released their plans for updates in 2021 : one in the spring, one in summer, and one in fall. And when the first one, the Lily update, came out, the announcement came with this paragraph :
[image description : an exempt from the Lily Update announcement, reading : “Gustav update : We haven’t forgotten about our announcement regarding Gustav’s story. We’re happy to say that we’ve collected invaluable feedback from a panel of gamers with disabilities, and will ajust the content accordingly, which we’ll implement along with the Beverly Update this summer. More information will come at a later date directly on our website, please stay tuned!”. After the text comes frames of Gustav, respectively walking, drinking tea, talking, and playing the violin.]
I’ve yet to see what the modifications will be, but I’m very happy to see this. Thunder Lotus made a mistake, and when it was pointed out to them, started working on it by getting more educated about the topic. This is the ideal scenario (besides not making the mistake in the first place) when it comes to this.
Anyways, can’t wait for the Beverly update!
i've decided that if i want to reboot my project for developing an anarchist media collective at giggleplex.red (giggleplex.red is down, don't bother looking for it), which i definitely want, i'll need to do 2 things.
give up on remote hosting and try to establish local hosting. it's not worth paying for remote hosting for the scant disk space it offers, i should also remember the proper channels for updating the packages on the server so it doesn't explode again.
give up on blogging platforms, even those such as mastodon. it is painfully clear to me now that blogspaces are antithetical to the objective of collaboration.
so, i'm gonna try to use my mac mini to host a collaborative forum via phpBB. it can host compressed file archives anyway, whereas blogspaces literally refuse to allow creators to post files of whatever format they choose.
for a bulletin board, it's not about the bloggers, it's about the topics, or the fandoms, or in this case, the projects. i think i might actually be planning to do it right this time.
maybe if it can get donations and i can appoint a treasurer for real, the collective could also have a mutual aid fund for the artists and volunteers. wouldn't that be nice?
but the thing is, there are roadblocks that i'm dealing with right now, for instance setting up a permanent residence in the midst of my family's wannabe redneck vanities. and i need to find a job.
so yea, i have a lot on my plate right now.
sorry

Everybody makes mistakes. That’s ok. It’s how you deal with it once you find out that you did so that shows your character.
Trump intervened to allow a robotics team of Afghan girls into the US for a competition when they had previously been denied visas.
Yeah. Fuck this linear time shit. Take me to the event horizon. Send me tf back. Let me do right by them
FYI, the pitiful loris has reason to be upset, beyond lack of a third hand: nocturama. org/abc-nightline-highlights-illegal-loris-pet-trade/ . I hope Scruffy Hobo Mutt recovers soon!
i got this message after posting a gif of a loris (it had a piece of food in each hand and was staring longingly at a third; i thought it was adorable) but it turns out it is actually more sad than it is cute. i took that post down, and posted a reply to another anon ask i got (thank you again for educating me!).
then, in my Spideypool fic, Black Jelly Beans, Actually, the character of deadpool has a twitter account where he campaigns against cruelty to the slow loris. because of course that’s something deadpool would do (a. because of how he latches onto random things, b. because the loris is cute, c. because wade knows what it’s like to be mistreated and experimented on, d. eadpool).
after writing and posting that fic, someone told me that @jordandwhite, the editor of my favorite Deadpool comics, said this on his Q&A blog: Wade’s favorite animal is the slow loris.
i love everything.
(also this is an old ask from when my scruffy hobo mutt fell into the nest of yellowjackets. although it might have been the time he ate his bodyweight in semi-sweet chocolate?--either way: he is fine! he is dogpool. <3)
