IN WHICH… Johnny Storm, effortlessly charming, endlessly flammable, finds his match in Lacrima, a cosmic being who doesn’t swoon, doesn’t fawn, and doesn’t quite understand why he’s so determined to make her smile.

The crowd was loud, cameras flashing, people cheering, everyone pushing closer for a glimpse of the Fantastic Four as they stood beneath the banners and spotlights. Reporters shouted questions. Fans held up signs. Johnny Storm, of course, was in his element.
He leaned into the attention with a grin like he was born for it, waving to the crowd, tossing out playful lines, winking at any woman who looked remotely his way. His jacket was only half zipped, like always, and he had that lazy, firecracker confidence that made people swoon and roll their eyes at the same time.
Lacrima stood toward the back of the crowd. Quiet. Still. Her glow was faint today, a gentle shimmer around her that made her look like she didn’t belong to this world or any other. She wasn’t trying to stand out, but people glanced at her anyway. Something about the way she held herself, distant, unreadable, ethereal.
Johnny saw her almost instantly. He always did.
Mid interview, he messed up a line. One of the reporters asked about the team’s next mission and he half answered, half looked over the sea of heads, like his mind had suddenly taken a nosedive.
“She always watches me like that,” he said later, backstage. “Like she’s trying to figure out if I’m worth keeping on this planet or not.”
She was waiting for him by the far wall when the crowd started to disperse. Unbothered by the chaos. Unimpressed by the fame. When he finally reached her, wiping sweat off his neck and tossing a water bottle to the side, she just nodded once in greeting.
“You were very expressive,” she said.
He gave her a crooked smile. “Yeah? That mean you liked the show?”
“I don’t know yet. I’m still processing.”
Johnny laughed, loud and a little breathless. She always made him feel like a high schooler trying too hard.
“You were staring,” he added, teasing.
“I was observing.”
“Same thing.”
“Not really.”
He leaned against the wall beside her, arms crossed, trying not to look directly at her because every time he did, it felt like standing too close to the sun. She wasn’t doing anything, just standing there, hands folded, head tilted like she was listening to music only she could hear, and yet somehow she made the whole world feel… quieter.
“You ever gonna give me a real answer?” he asked.
“About what?”
“If you like me.”
“I don’t know what that means.”
He let out a groan, half laugh, dragging a hand down his face. “Oh come on, you do know. You just like watching me suffer.”
“No,” she said, thoughtful. “But I do find the way your heart rate changes around me… interesting.”
He stared at her. She blinked slowly, curious but unmoved. It was infuriating. And kind of adorable.
“You’re dangerous,” he muttered.
“You’re flammable.”
That actually made him laugh again, loud enough to turn a few heads. He shook his head, lips twitching.
“You’re gonna be the end of me.”
“Do humans usually say that when they’re enjoying themselves?”
He looked at her then, really looked, and for a second, all the confidence dropped away.
“Yeah,” he said softly. “They do.”
She just tilted her head again. Said nothing. Watched him like he was a flickering candle in a dark room, fascinating and a little unnecessary. She didn’t get it. Not yet. But Johnny could wait. He always liked a slow burn.
