I respect and adore my cox. I expect...at least the former in return
Am I wrong?
This morning I was doing a 30 minute erg piece
and about halfway through my average split started to rise and I was about to give up on it. Just at the 15:00 mark, the cox came up to me and said "Shelby, you look so much better than you did the last time you were on an erg. I don't know what you did, but it worked." That gave me the motivation to give it my all for the rest of the piece ^_^
Just my two cents.......
I'm going to stick up for two groups of people here - coaches and coxes.
Firstly, coaches. They aren't counsellors. They aren't our parents. In our squads case, they aren't even getting paid. They don't have to be nice. They don't have to let you row with your friends. They are there to make the hard decisions. They are there to push you. They are there to critique and criticise and yell and to give you suggestions for improvement. They are there to put together the fastest boats with the best chance of winning.
Everything else is on you. Improvement can only come from you.
Secondly, coxes. They definitely aren't getting paid. They do it for the love of the sport. They are there to push, encourage, cajole and yell (if necessary) to get the best out of the individuals in their boat and the crew as a whole. They make tough calls and split-second decisions, they think fast and react faster. Their job can be thankless and miserable or it can be the best in the world.
They command and deserve the respect of their rowers, both on and off the water.
There are some girls in my squad who would be well served to remember these things. There are some girls who should show more respect to a coach who has already put up with a lot. Who has given much of his own time and effort to trying to make this squad work. There are some girls who should recognise that our cox gave up an awful lot to come and work specifically with us this season (including leaving the boat club he'd been a part of for three years). Be a little nicer. It won't kill you :)
