Hi! I have a regatta this weekend, but most of our coxswains are going to a festival and won't be there, so my coach chose me to cox at this regatta. I've been wanting to cox for a while (usually I row) and I was wondering if you had any tips or calls that I could use to convince my coach to let me cox more often? I have raced and practiced as a coxswain, but I'm a bit bigger than the other coxswains on my team, so I think I need to step it up if my coach will let me be a permanent coxswain.
Hey!!My biggest tip is be confident, confidence is by far the most important thing you can have as a coxie! Even if you aren't fully confident as a cox stay calm and collected and it will instill confidence in the crew. Fake it till you make it! In terms of calls there isn't really magic formula, talk to your girls/guys and get to know what motivates them both individually and as a member of the boat. Taking that initiative to sit down and talk to them will really pay off I promise! As well try and sit down with the boat and develop a skeleton structure for your race plan. Don't over plan it just know the start, the move pieces, and the finish. The rest should come in the moment I.e calling off of other boats and letting the crew know where they are. When in doubt resort back to technical calls, there will always be something to fix!I hope this helped ☺️Good luck and let me know how things turn out!
