How to incorporate yarn crafts into your cottage magic journey!

If you are a witch that likes to journal or keep a book of shadows, you can use this to help plan out your crafts. You can write down what you want to make, your goals, the colors, and what hooks you are using. This allows you to focus your intentions, your goals, and even color magic into the craft! Crocheting and knitting can also be calming and possibly meditative! It can help you get ready for a different spell as well, if you are not using the yarn for the spell itself!

This can also be a form of knot magic, and you can focus protection or any other outcome as you work and make your stitches/knots in the yarn/string! You are most likely zoning out anyway while working, so thinking about your intentions should be easy to do in the moment. If knot (:3) then you can write your intentions in a journal to help you!

You can also burn incense or a candle while you work to help calm yourself, breathe life into the craft, and help set your intentions. 

Did you know that you can make a familiar out of yarn? They obviously behave differently from a living familiar but they are still used for protection and companionship! 

Yarn can also be used for jinxing and hexing. You can weave your intentions into the yarn and then burn it at the end of the project. Please make sure you are being careful and practicing proper fire safety!

You can also make offerings with the objects you’ve made. Remember, deities often prefer handmade offerings than store bought offerings!

Follyglass : Change

As a small child, Winnet liked accompanying her mother to Boston, especially in winter. Everyone there dressed in long coats - always black - so it stood to reason in Winnet’s mind that they were all Magister of Crafts… just like her mother was. When she asked the passersby ‘Are you a M’aster of knots?’ and ‘can you tell me where to get celestial cullet?’ she never received answers, only confused glances, which Winnet returned. It was a simple misunderstanding that Winnet only learned about when she got a little bit older; not everyone was a crafter. Not everyone had a coat that changed color according to her skills.

When it was hung on the peg in the hallway, her mother’s coat was scarlet velvet with stitches in lavender and black and ochre; but as soon as her mother donned it, all of the colors sank into twilight and then midnight deeper. This black, this beautiful black, it was a sign of mastery, of skill, of wisdom. In the crafter world, it was the presence of everything magnificent. Winnet was proud that her mom was a Magister.

Sometimes Winnet would put on her mother’s coat and watch the bright colors fade to dove gray and then to white. Her own coat of blue did the same, the white coat was a sign of a beginning crafter. Someday, she figured, she would be a Magister and wear her black coat all the time. Every day. Even when she was eating tomato sandwiches in her grandfather’s kitchen. For now, though, she had to work on her s-twists.

Paper Magic with Origami and a Japanese Legend

Have you ever heard the story about Sadako Sasaki and the 1,000 cranes? In Japan there is an ancient legend that if a person were to fold 1,000 paper cranes they would receive a wish granted by the gods. Sadako Sasaki was a little girl that grew sick with leukemia after having been exposed to nuclear radiation from the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. She began folding paper cranes at the age of 12 after being inspired by the legend. I read a fictionalized version of this story when I was little and it has always stuck with me and I have always associated 1,000 paper cranes as a myth to heal leukemia.

So here I am attempting to fold as many pink and white paper cranes as possible for a coworker that is currently battling breast cancer. This, my friends, is an example of paper magic. A spell is the act of directing your intent and power towards a specific outcome often with props that help focus your intent. I am folding paper cranes that I associate with healing cancer and selected the color of my cranes based on the color used to symbolize the specific form of cancer. As I fold each crane my intent is worked into those folds crane after crane. The jar is slowing filling with a physical manifestation of my care and hope for my coworker for healing and strength during the course of her battle.

I could go further. I could create an infusion with or without essential oil that I could use to either trace a sigil of healing and strength on each square a paper before folding and/or lightly spritz the finished cranes or into the jar periodically. I could pass the squares of paper through the smoke of a personally blended incense. I could burn the incense while folding. I could burn a candle in pink or white or green that could also be anointed with the above mentioned infusion. I could include in the jar a satchel including plants and/or stones.

I find paper magic very difficult to pin down and define when I am asked what it is, but the more examples one sees the more one is able to understand what can be included as paper magic. I mean, it’s magic, the possibilities are endless once you start thinking the right way.

One of the more unusual magics passed down through Native traditions is that of basket weaving - more specifically, the art of weaving magic into a basket as one weaves it by hand. Though many cultures across the world had histories of basketmaking, none in the world, either mundane or magical, could compare with those skills passed down by the tribes of California.

The beauty and utility of the baskets produced by magical and non-magical hands alike were such that the Native peoples had no need to make the change to pottery as their more southern kin did, and European-descended wix often had hard trouble telling where the craftsmanship ended and the magic began. Even unenchanted baskets could be woven tightly enough to hold boiling water, and enchantments have been reported to vary as widely as the baskets they were woven into.

The tradition was nearly lost due to the decimation of both the tribes and the plants with which they made their baskets, thanks to disease and the desecration of the land by Spanish and later American settlers. By the time La Academia Occidental opened its doors, many tribes’ techniques had been lost, in part or in full, and the remainder struggled together to piece together traditions torn apart over the decades by the families of the children they now learned beside.

In the early 1990s, efforts were made by a statewide gathering of people, both Native and otherwise, to revive and restore the ancient practice in full. Through providing a healthy environment for both weaver and plant, as well as increasing the protected territories of both, a resurgence has brought the art back into popular awareness. Now, anyone with money to spend can get themselves a basket enchanted with anything preserving charms to feather-light charms to charms promoting good health, though the secrets behind the magic itself still remains firmly among those willing to dedicate themselves to the art and the cause.

I made a witch’s ladder today out of green cotton cord and dried rose buds. The red buds are from a tea I bought and the white ones are from a rose plant I got for my eleventh birthday. It’s for love, comfort, beauty, and growth.
