Setting up a DJ rig for the house or the bedroom will require the same type of planning you would use if you were to setup a home theater system.  Basically, you need to understand what will be added to the house, and each component of the system will also need.  Also, you may need to work with what you already have available to you – this could be an old set of two way speakers or even an old receiver that can be used to help route audio.  Budget is often the biggest concern, so it pays to realize the hidden costs of any piece of gear.  For example, if you buy a new pair of studio monitors then you will also need the correct cables to route them with.  You might also need some isolation foam to keep them from vibrating on the desk. Numark CDMix Bluetooth Previewed

As much as we love our fancy controllers and digital decks, there is still a need for dual CD type players – especially when they are packaged into one complete unit.  Many DJ’s roll their setups into a gig on a dolly, unloading them to span the length of a flat table.  All that is left is to arrange items at the proper height, along with a nice laptop stand or external screen that allows the monitor to sit at eye level.  What these guys forget is that many systems aren’t as flexible and need to be compressed into some sort of rack mount on wheels.  These mounts usually house much more than a few digital players – they might even house a large mixing board and amp. Musikmesse 2013: Best Of The Rest

As in any type of trade show, you have the favorites who are expected to show off something new and exciting, while the little guys have nothing to lose by showing off their latest innovations as well.  It is a chance for the little guys to draw interest and make a name for them, while the top dogs have to defend their territory from outsiders.  At a well known trade show in the UK, there wasn’t much in the field of innovation but rather, there were some decently priced products offered by the not so well known guys.  The stuff they produced was actually on par with the quality we’ve seen from the big guys as well. The honorable mentions should go to the companies who tried something different, instead of filling the need for another MIDI controller with spinning jog wheels.  We are getting tired of seeing too many copies of the same thing around anyways.  One cool item was the UDG laptop stand.  UDG is not known for making laptop stands, since they make backpacks and other luggage type gear – but their stand offers a few innovations that rival that of the Crane stand makers. http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2013/04/musikmesse-2013-best-of-the-rest/

UDG Introduces Creator Laptop Stand

There is a small market for laptop stands, but that market isn’t getting any larger.  It is not something that needs to be bought over and over, and once a DJ finds what he likes, there isn’t a reason to go out and buy a new one.  It’s not the same as a mixer or digital deck, where a DJ afford to buy something he likes and maybe trade up in the future when it is time to move to the next level.  A stand is something you only want to buy once.  It should work the first time and then you won’t have to deal with ever again, assuming it doesn’t fail.
