Hi @creative-type, I'm your secret santa!
For your gift, I chose to write about Nami, who you listed as one of your favorite characters from One Piece, and her integration into the Straw Hat crew. I hope you enjoy the fic and have a wonderful holiday! :D
So if Ana had been born in Crease, would she have been good enough to train as a wright? I'm trying to imagine what her potential is/was as a spell caster, but it's difficult because almost every time we see her she's in way over her head.
You need to look at what makes a great wright: intelligence, confidence, quick thinking, mathematics ability, keen spatial awareness, mindfulness, and courage. Pymary can be taught, but if you don’t have these intrinsic abilities, you’re going to hit a wall early on. Even Plats only have mechanical advantages (longer range, more capacious ports/more power). A brilliant Crescian wright will outcast a mediocre Plat any day of the week.
Ana is smart, she’s brave, she’s determined as all hell, but I don’t think she has the confidence, the mindfulness, nor the physical skillset to be a great spellcaster. She’s always craved the ability to rip peoples’ heads off; she wants to feel safe and keep safe those she loves. That’s what turned a prostitute towards pymary. But she just doesn’t have the chops to be much more than competent.
And that’s okay. Even being competent in pymary is an achievement. As you said though, she got in over her head and it wasn’t enough. She saw Knock-Me-Down making it work; beefing up with Toby, learning to crack skulls, making an identity for herself after leaving Sharteshane. Ana wanted to keep up with her best friend, be useful, be something more than what Nary had said she could be. She wanted to be what Stockyard needed, wanted to be Toby’s badass girlfriend. She wanted so much. But wantin’ ain’t gettin’. The world doesn’t care how bad you want something if you can’t pay for it.
Ana and Knock’s story isn’t over yet though. We’ll see them again.

edwinflores428 answered: You really think you’re at the half-way mark of the series!? *laughs menacingly*…not even close
Glad to hear it. I want it to go on forever. ;_;
paddster answered: btw what would you and the community here think about a little advent calendar thing, where we (NWOP community) post a panel/page/ep screenshot of OP every day/blog post of yours ? Of course it cannot be sth spoilery but we could do a little nostalgic trip and go arc by arc, beginning from chapter 1 so as to refresh your mind of little/big things that happened or might foreshadow sth that has yet to come. =)
Since I don´t know much about tumblr I don´t know wether there is an easier solution or if this would be too much reblogs/anwsers at once^^.
Also if we do it we should double-check not to post the same pages/situation as somebody else already did.
So what do you guys think?:)
P.S.: instead of ep. screenshots we could post the scene from the epsiode or an amv
That’s an awesome idea! It could be a little nostalgic treat for all the rest of the OP fans! (And a reminder for me, ahaha). *_*
creative-type answered: You’ve already met the mermaid. The starfish as well, if I remember correctly.
Hat-chan’s takoyaki joint! The best in the OPverse, right? I can’t wait to see the inevitable reunion between Nami and the ex-Arlong pirate.
greatninjadragon answered: The fact that Robin, Luffy, and Brook were the ones in the sub is funny to me because all 3 are DF users. Was everyone ok with sending 3 people who can’t swim 5 km deep underwater? Probably pulled straws to go with Luffy
I know, right? And Chopper said that he wanted a go too! Those DF users love living dangerously. xD
sebazu answered: Do you really not remember these guys? Hint: they haven’t appeared in the anime before but you have certainly seen them.
I honestly didn’t remember them until they mentioned their connection to Hat-chan. Then the cover story came flooding back. Sad that poor Hat-chan has been captured but looking forward to seeing how he’ll react on meeting Nami again.
supramp9000 answered: Kuma as a Pacifista is expected to be obedient to orders from Marine Headquarters, in this case helping his fellow Shichibukai in his time of need. If a tired Strawhat crew survived an encounter with him it would only make sense that Sengoku would be suspicious. Perhaps Kuma’s too embarrased to tell them the truth about what happened. Perhaps he let them slide out of his own amusement. Or, perhaps… However you decide to look at it right now, it will be a while before you begin to see any actual answers.
Now, about the “face” everyone keeps alluding to… It’s a little ridiculous.
If Kuma is normally obedient to the World Government, what is his game in letting the Strawhats walk free? This guy, along with Admiral Aokiji, is one of the most mysterious in One Piece. Cannot figure him out. I’m guessing the face is Duval?
blogquantumreality answered: WOOHOO! Starfish guy and mermaid :D And Garp cracks me the fuck UP XD Keep in mind, he and Sengoku are two middle-aged men and they actually fight over rice balls. X-P I started wondering about Kuma here, too, as well.
The thought of Garp and Sengoku bickering like kids is hilarious. Garp is an overgrown kid, anyway. It’d be hard to stay sane in his presence. It’s amazing Sengoku is still sane. xD
martyslittleusedblog answered: Hey hey! Don’t you think that mermaid and starfish look familiar, hmmm? :]
I swear, I did not recognise them until Camie mentioned Hatchin. Then I knew. They helped the octopus guy from Arlong Park set up his restaurant in the cover story! ^_^
thedarkghostlygothgirl answered: Pfft I’m losing it at your comment about Luffy taking revenge on anyone who hurts his crew. Ah…maybe luffy hasn’t done it but…PFFFFT
Uh oh. Have I said something important? Or stupid. I can never tell. (Don’t tell me, if I have. File it away and you can point and laugh later. xD) Considering how angry he gets when anyone threatens his crew, I just get this impression he would completely freak and destroy whoever did it.
cheffailure: World-building naturally plays a major role in the enjoyment of an adventure series like One Piece, so I’m glad you are keeping track. Please note when I say that serpent currents and sea monsters are going to be tiny, ineffectual details compared to the insanity coming your way. And it’s not necessarily by pushing the fantastic angle either. But I digress.
I totally get where you’re coming from about Oda not pushing the fantastic angle. In 386, we were just introduced to the OPverse slave trade/human trafficking. D:
nounoursonne answered: Oh you cannot miss the Face pun okay ?, you might think you got it too early though x) as for that starfish… His backstory is well….“Really!?…..” The denden mushi mimicking Luffy and Brook was A+ during this episode :p
I made a couple of guesses as to who Duval might be but I’m not sure if I’ve hit the mark. Trying to figure out who could have a grudge against Luffy is hard. There are so many people now. xD
slaxtheraven answered: You’ve now roughly 40% in One Piece. Manga (as of chapter 807) is 60-65% right now.
Oh man, I’m not even halfway through? I’ve been doing this for a year! xD
paddster answered: I´m sure I´m not the only one to mention this, but you’ve seen the starfish and the mermaid before^^ think Teriyaki ;D
I did not catch the connection until Camie dropped Hatchin’s name. Then I realised: hey, they’re the ones who helped Hachi set up his restaurant in the cover story! ^_^
infriga answered: The characters in Strong World are canon, Shiki for example is a real character in the One Piece world who exists. However the actual events of the movie aren’t canon as far as we know. I’m assuming it’s the same for Film Z since so much of the movie ties into canon, and some character appearances were revealed before the manga, and those appearances were canon.
Ah, so Oda has imported a canon character and made him and his crew the antagonists for Strong World. I think I get it now. ^_^ Isn’t there supposed to be a new OP movie coming out soon? I say that because I’m crossing my fingers Scotland Loves Anime will pick it up for a future line up.
paddster answered: I´m not to big into the Angel/moon theory, mainly bc I don´t know wheter I want the plot to go in that way. I will say though, one clue struck me, because it would be very much oda-like to foreshadow it in a rather subtle and throw-away way.
It´s not a spoiler, perhaps it is even nothing but see for yourself: it´s the cover of volume 27…
Luffy with wings, eh? Interesting...
serrende answered: (Thank you! ♥ *^_^*)
Don’t feel bad about getting mixed up! This is such a massive canon by this time and the anime-only stuff doesn’t make it easier. Speaking for myself, it can be really hard to keep track of when everything happens.
I think that Sanji blowing up on Luffy was both an understandable reaction under the circumstances (compare when he did the same with Zoro right after Usopp left the crew), but also another instant of ~something in the air~ of the island adversely affecting the crew, leading to more serious bickering and hurt feelings than normal. From one angle, Sanji could absolutely be justified in thinking Luffy went into it way too easily (he wasn’t even angry at the Baron to start with, unlike with Foxy); but from another, everyone was relaxed to begin with and Luffy had no reason to believe such truly sinister things were afoot. Still, one can also see why Luffy would blame himself. So that all seemed pretty plausible and well-written to me… from what I remember at least. (It’s been a long time since I watched the movie.)
When it comes to Strong World’s canon-ness, it always felt like me that it could easily have been so, it’s just that it won’t quite fit into the timeline of the manga. Though maybe there were some other things too, but I can’t remember those… Its origin from an idea Oda had but couldn’t fit into the manga reminds me of Usopp’s Loguetown episode, the “Daddy the Father” one. But that one at least could still have fit into the manga in terms of timeline.
I swear, I’ll need to make myself a timeline of the stuff that’s happened so far. All I have to do is read back through some of my posts! xD
Yeah, that ~something in the air~ is one thing I didn’t really pick up on. The Lily Carnation had an almost supernatural element to it. Its influence wasn’t just physical. It caused the psychological meltdowns too.
I remember that Usopp filler from Loguetown. Ever since then, I’ve been desperate for Usopp to have a face-off with another brilliant sharpshooter. My dream is to see him pitted against Van Augur. *_*
meheartonepiece answered: It’s really a pity you’ve been spoiled on the names of the arcs, but oh well, those arcs are wild regardless XDDD
I like movie 4 too. Cool plot, interesting (hot) characters, a villain with an unexpected power… I liked it :) Actually, I remember marathoning the movies with my brother during a week of holidays, because I remember keeping my eyes on the screen as I went to make us some food XDDD
Time for the cute “before shit hits the fan” episodes! :D
I know, right? Bloody CR. I always have to close my eyes or look slightly away because they have the episodes in reverse order, so when you’re scrolling down, you see the latest episodes first. I live in fear of thumbnail spoilers. D:
You are so lucky you have your brother to marathon OP with. All my friends are “normal” (i.e. non anime appreciating people). Well, I have one, but he prefers darker, sci-fi and fantasy inspired stuff and he only appears when the anime festival is on the horizon. xD
Are there people (black tongues, even) that are trying to make "artificial" first materials that could be used when the natural stuff runs out?
Oh, there must be. And in a sense that’s what inspired Vienne’s research with First Earth and spreading its Firstness to base materials. But many say the thing to do is find a way to bypass First Materials altogether; to permanently imbue and enchant base materials somehow. No one’s managed it yet, but wrights are always trying to further pymary and devise new tech.
