Even though Crinodendron hookerianum 'Ada Hoffmann' (Chile lantern tree) can make a large, evergreen shrub this one is being successful grown in a container. The flowers are normally red but this cultivar provides pale pink flowers. This plant needs a well-drained, acidic soil in a sheltered position, which is why this specimen is in a container. The young shoots and flower buds may be damaged by late frosts.

Found flowering in an Inverness front garden was the evergreen shrub Crinodendron hookerianum (Chile lantern tree). This plant needs a fertile, moist but well-drained acidic soil in a sheltered position.

The flowers of Crinodendron hookerianum 'Ada Hoffmann' (Chile lantern tree) are pink rather than the usual red of the species. This specimen is growing in a container but in a fertile, moist but well-drained, acidic soil it can become a large, evergreen shrub. The plant needs in a sheltered position, in partial shade or in sun but where the roots can be kept cool.

The gorgeous, pendant, fruit-like flowers of Crinodendron hookerianum (Chile Lantern Tree) today’s #oneadayplant . In my experience, it does better in sheltered spots in Scotland than it does in most of England, but in an acid soil in the South of England, there are some truly magnificent plants. . The other species of Crinodendron that we grow in the UK is C. patagua, which is white flowered. I have just bought a white form of C. hookerianum called ‘Alf Robbins’, which I haven’t grown before. Looking forward to seeing how it does. . Evergreen, pretty tough and durable, this can, in time, become a really large and weighty shrub. I can’t recall seeing it trained as a tree, but I can get big enough to be. To my mind, better to have the flowers close enough to see them with ease. . The lantern tree: lighting the way towards midsummer

Crinodendron hookerianum

A young plant in the south area of the Rock Garden is the Chilean lantern tree, Crinodendron hookerianum, so called by the shape and orientation of the flowers.

This evergreen reaches 3.5m in the Valdivian rainforest of southern Chile, where they are seen growing on riverbanks from sea level to 600m. Fruit production is abundant in the native populations.

Here at the Garden, flower bud production commences in autumn but it is now that the pink shades of the lantern-shaped corolla are fully appreciated. The fused petals that make up the corolla are waxy thick; on fading, they disintegrate apart revealing the decorative flower parts. When complete, the top is a serrated circle which would double as a pastry cutter. Take a moment to appreciate the artistic twist of the anthers and filaments. At the base of these are the buttercup-yellow nectaries.

The flowers are held on stalks from the leaf axil on the previous year’s growth. As the wood ages the brown stems are covered in white lenticels.

Luma apiculata

Luma apiculata, native to Chile and Argentina. An evergreen small tree covered in white blossom. The flowers have a multitude of anthers splayed apart. The bark on the trunk plates away revealing a grey sub layer as the plant matures.

Crinodendron patagua, Chile. Delicate white flowers with a crimped edge to the petals are produced from the leaf axils of the current season’s growth. Glossy green leaves give a fresh appearance to this stout growing shrub.

Both are to be found growing in the Chilean Area.
